As I understand it the kid that was arrested was in court all last week. That is a real travesty as there should not be jetskis there in the first place and there is a real lack of training & safety measures.

what a load of nonsense....these were two adults ( albeit from down under ) i'm sure they have ridden them before and these accidents can happen, even tho' they shouldn't!

The history of Jetski's on Patong Beach is well known. A 13 year old boy was killed in 2003, good evidence of a lack of safety procedures. The Jetskis should not be on a swimming beach.

EXACTLY! Jetskis will be banned from 2011 on Phuket. Why not ban them now? How many more deaths and horrendous accidents need occur for the profits of so very few? They have no place on a crowded swimming beach. And they have no place with the inexperienced public. Argument over.

ps. KOSullivan- I am a journalist so please don't slight my profession in such a biased manner.

So britmaveric is a lawyer now as I read his latest comment.  He he he he!  :o

:D

Hi Brit

You sure made some "friends" with the 3 newbies, I think it's about time to ban them with the language they are using, it doesn't belong in this forum.

I have thick skin, no worries! :D

Khall - jetski(s) aren't the problem - its the idiots that drive them. They need to be operated safe distance from other jetski(s), swimmers, and other vessels. No where near divezones.

They won't be banned because they make too much dosh for the operators.

Here is the latest news lJet-ski victim still in ICU

BANGKOK: Australian Antonio Scognamiglio, 19, who was involved in a jet-ski collision off Patong Beach on November 23, is recovering in intensive care after undergoing brain surgery at Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok.

Mr Scognamiglio sustained his injuries when a fellow jet-ski rider crashed into him. He was rushed unconscious to Patong Hospital where his heart stopped. Staff managed to revive him and he was later transferred to Bangkok Phuket Hospital, then to Bangkok’s Bumrungrad Hospital.

A police investigation revealed that 20-year-old William Forest, also of Australia, crashed his jet-ski into his friend in a moment of high spirits.

Pol Maj Sophon Borrirak of Kathu Police explained to the Gazette yesterday that Mr Forest was charged with negligence causing grievous bodily harm. The maximum sentence for this act is imprisonment not exceeding th ree years or a fine not exceeding 6,000 baht, or both.

Bumrungrad Hospital has not disclosed details of Mr Scognamiglio’s condition following his father’s request for privacy.

Khall64au - I honestly never meant to attack your Journalist profession. I agree 100% with your comments and I apologise if I insulted you. I was just a little upset at some of the previous comments that were said in a time when I was in shock and trying to come to terms with the tragic accident that took place. I understand that people have a right to their opinion but I just don't believe in hurting people unnecessarily.

I thank you for your comments and even though my son and Tony are both home now I want to try my hardest to stop this type of accident from happening again. I know I can't stop it but I would really like to do what I can to ensure that reasonable safety measures are put in place before allowing anyone (especially young people) access to one of these powerful machines. I would prefer that the jet ski's were banned, but if this can't happen then let us try and make them as safe as we possibly can by placing harsh restrictions on them.

Sadly jetskis are now making an appearance in a bigger way on the quieter beach at Karon. I went for a swim yesterday to find four of these machines for hire at a very popular swimming point towards the southern end. The sea air was tainted with the odour of oil and the noise pollution, though not quite up there with the Harley Davidsons, was unpleasant in what was previously a relatively peaceful spot.

A friend of mine's son suffered serious brain damage in a jetski accident in Cyprus a few years ago and I have been concerned about safety ever since. Watching a young boy of about eleven years old riding at full pelt and other obviously inexperienced riders negotiating their way through the swimmers on the way to and from the shore were of particular concern.

They can't be banned but why can't they be restricted to less busy areas?

Dont want to spill oil on the fire, but here in Queensland and I suppose elsewhere as well , these so called High Spirits :D on high powered machines are killing and maiming innocent people, no offense to the family of the boys concerned, but they must be honest and admit their sons probably behave the same when they are driving at home!!we are just getting over the holiday carnage on the roads and on the water , the death toll is so high the Govt is bringing in new traffic laws Unique to Australia "Stupidity in Charge Of A Car or Waterborn Vehicle" Its tragic the loss of lives and injuries at the moment, but you can not ban jetski.s or any other machine :o but you can try to ensure that the people who use them are aware of their responsabilities , a tourist is a tourist does not give a fiddlers fart what he or she do in a country where they are Guest!!nignoy

Nignoy - No those boys don't drive like that in Australia actually. You would be proud to know these two men. Don't make comments like that, you don't know them and both families are struggling at the moment, they have suffered enough, this is not over for them. Have your say, thats fine, but try not to offend the family. These boys are not responsible for the horrible road death toll just because they are 20 and had a

jet ski accident, so please, no personal digs at the boys. These types of holiday sport activities are there for fun, and thats exactly what they were doing. This WAS a pure accident, no mucking around involved at all, just a tragic, horrible accident that devestated many people, not to mention the two boys involved. It is important for any country to have such activities for their citizens and tourists, however, the responsibilities don't just lie with the tourist. These machines need to be controlled and/or patrolled by the operators (who should be trained lifeguards), it needs to be in a confined area with driving direction. In Wollongong we have a waterslide park, this park is patrolled by many life savers and you must abide by strict rules, otherwise you are asked to leave. The operators of this park do not leave much room for terrible accidents to occur. I am sure this is for the sake of their valued customers, but also because they can appreciate the fact that they must take resposibility for a safe enviroment. The same with Workplace Safety, everyone is involved. Stupidity unfortunately will always be there, but with rules and regulations these people would be the ones asked to leave with no refund. Best of both worlds!!

We live on the directly on the Pumicestone Passage and we see the recklessness every day!!,be it hoons on the road or so called high spirits and stupidity on jetskis on the water we have had several jetski deaths in the last few months also many injuries through jetski accidents, you can not compare a closed environment like a water park to the open beach, we have many incidents here where jetskis are in the shipping lanes creating havoc amongst incoming and outgoing ships. I did not mean to upset the families in any way, but before people start screaming about health and safety practises in thailand, they should make sure they function here in australia first, we had a traffic accident in rawai a couple of years ago, a 14 yearold boy from WA in a fourwheeldrive smashed into us on a crossroads, his father had hired the vehicle for him, the 14 yearold was driving showing off with his friends, 2 of which were hospitalised, where was the control and responsibility there. nignoy

I think the family of the jet ski owners should have a day out on the jet ski's .... no training..... lessons ......... no anything ........ and let's hope they don't have an accident!! And if they do I bet they won't be arrested and sent to prison pending legal invesigation. Let's us save that for the tourists hey????

I am sympathetic to your situation but I think that to blame the operators and even worse to wish the same tragedy to befall their families is disengenuous at best. If you are in pain that is understandable, but why wish the same on another parent?

If you could take an objective view of the situation (which I fully understand is virtually impossible given your position) you would probably agree that the accident was solely the fault of the two riders alone. Young men around the world have always and will always take risks; sometimes they get away with it and sometimes they don't. In this case it seems they didn't and the result is there for all to see.

But please, leave the jetski operators out of it. They are running a business and should not be responsible for how the customers use the product. The blame for this accident rests squarely on the shoulders of the lads involved, and perhaps in the bigger picture on their peers or guardians for not teaching them to act more responsibly and maturely.
