I'll be in the Bang Sue area of Bangkok in a few days and I'll need to get to Hua Lamphong station. I understand there are mainline trains that go direct between these two stations. Can someone confirm this and how much it will cost?

Also, are there many trains and will I need to book a certain one?

.

Why go by mainline when it takes ages. There a MRT station at Bangsue and it.s quicker. I have done this a couple of times when returning from Butterworth.

On a semi-related note (okay, I'm hijacking)- The first time I took the weekend tourist train from Hua Lampong to Kanchanaburi, I got on at Hua Lampong. Now it looks like I could get on and off the tourist train at Bang Sue and take the MRT home, saving time on both ends of the trip and a taxi ride in the morning because the tourist train leaves at 6:30, too early to catch the MRT to Hua Lampong.

Is that feasible, or am I missing something in the fine print that would prevent me from sleeping in an hour later, doing that and getting home an hour earlier on my weekend?

Isn't the tourist train to kanchanaburi just the normal train at a higher price ticket?

It may well be- but at 120 Baht round trip, I won't complain. It's the best deal on travel I've ever gotten, especially since I'm a WWII history buff. (It's not the absolute best trip I've ever taken, but the best $4 I've ever spent on travel)

My understanding is the special tourist train only runs Saturday and Sunday and unspecified holidays, leaves earlier in the morning, and goes all the way to the end of the active track.

Still a noob in Bangkok and not familiar with all its leisure opportunities, I highly recommend the trip- though next time I'll get off at the (mis-named) Bridge on the River Kwai and forego the rest of the ride, catching the same train on its way back.

Yeah u can't complain too much about 120 baht return. The weekend trains might have some extra 'tourist' carriages tacked on? 2nd class, in addition to the 3rd? I'm not 100% sure, but i think those trains act as the regular passenger service as well.

It is only a short taxi ride - why use MRT 27km trip for what is only about 8km?

With a little bit of tongue in cheek:

1) Because I've never gotten lost for half an hour on the MRT or BTS.

2) Because when I set out for the "Emporium" on mass transit, I don't end up at the "Imperial" Hotel

3) I've never found a rigged ticket machine on the MRT

4)To my knowledge, I have never passed the same intersection twice on mass transit on the same trip.

5) I've never been offered a stop at a Massage Parlor on the MRT.

6) I've never been asked to step off the MRT or BTS and empty my pockets for the nice police officer, even at Nana and Asoke Stations.

7) I've never had to get off the MRT because they refused to honor the legal price.

I have come to discover that mass transit isn't always the most cost effective means of getting around Bangkok- as long as everything goes right. But it sure gives a noob a sense of security before local smarts and language skills are developed.

7) No seat belts on either (usually), but i always feel safer on the train. Some of the kamikaze rides to or from the airport!! whoa!

NO- as the hormal trains leave from Thonburi/west side and not from HuaLPOng. PLus they run sat/sun only and in fact are CHEAPER-the other trains have the special farang price of 100 bt./single-and obvously 120 bt return is less. It is more exp. for thai-they travel free on the 3d cl normal trains.

Back to Q; trains are always, always late-often hours, so wating for this trip on them is not a hurry-up thing. IF you want; the normal 3d cl trains cost free for Thai/ 2 bt for farang and for the epxress you pay 2bt/2d and 5 bt/2nd cl PLUS the 60/80 bt surcharge for the very same speed. This is reduced on some trains to the 10/20 bt special fare.

You can take the MRT underground train service from Bang-sue Station to MRT Hua Lampong Station for approximately 45 baht. It would take approximately 30 minutes or more, depending on the time you decide to use the service. Morning services are more frequent, so too evenings. The afternoon arrivals are at set times apart. Hope it helps, and enjoy BKK!
