webfact Posted December 28, 2011 Share Posted December 28, 2011 DSI set to tackle eight 'special' criminal activities PIYANUT THAMNUKASETCHAI THE NATION The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has agreed to take on eight criminal activities as special issues, DSI director-general Tarit Pengdith said yesterday. The activities are: - Smuggling of Siamese rosewood from Nakhon Phanom, Kalasin and other areas; - Illegally issuing title deeds on 16,700 rai of state-owned land in Phetchabun's Lom Kao district; - Trespassing on treasury-administered land in Ratchaburi's Suan Phung district, as well as mining without patent permits in Loei's Muang and Wang Saphung districts; - 16 companies that won procurement bids in Pattaya with a forged Bt400-million guarantee from UOB Bank; - Luring Lao women to Thailand and forcing them to go into prostitution; - Drug-dealing networks in Narathiwat's Sungai Kolok and other provinces; - Gambling via Sport4X.net and other such websites; and - Smuggling of weapons from Cambodia. The DSI and the Army have already seized a number of rocket-propelled grenades and M79 bullets. On December 19, the Cabinet agreed to expand the scope of special cases to cover criminal cases related to computer activity, foreign-owned businesses in Thailand, human trafficking, mining, finance business, cosmetics, hazardous substances, medicine and food. -- The Nation 2011-12-29 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The "graft-busting agency" is the NACC - currently they are investigating Supoth, however I believe they have over 1,500 cases currently under investigation. I seem to remember they were prepared to present over 600 cases to court recently. They are not a small agency, however you could triple their size and it would still take years to bring a case to court unless it was pushed to the top of the heap. It seems a clear sign that they are being sidelined to do less important work that should be done by the police and keep them off anything that could be threatening to the government. The concept of the DSI as a force within the Justice Ministry, independent from the police, was a good idea but politicians have made sure that it hasn't worked.
