How In Chiang Mai?

Featured Replies

Hi all, I'm relatively new on this forum but been reading it with great interest since me and my bf are considering of moving to chiang mai next year. i'm from finland and he is malaysian chinese.

now what i was wondering after reading the thread of how women are being treated by men in thailand, i thought i'd ask if anyone has had bad experiences (ie. butt grabbing, asking whether you're russian etc :o ) in chiang mai. and also if someone can think of something else useful for me to know, being from a nordic country and young as well :D .

thanks to you all in advance for your replies!

CHiang Mai's becoming a big city, and bringing wiht it big city problems. There are a few streets I wouldn't walk on at night without a guy with me. But generally Chiang Mai is safe if you keep your wits about you. Don't travel alone at night in a tuktuk or songtaew. Don't walk down dark streets by yourself. Don't take money out of ATMs late at night. Would you do any of these things in your own country? People often take chances in a foreign country that they would never take in their own country, all in the spirit of adventure. Common sense applies in any situation. I've never heard of foreign girls being asked if they're Russian or being groped, except in clubs but then that's what clubs are there for, basically. You're coming with your boyfriend so you're not likely to fall prey to the young tourist/cute THai guy trap where he ends up leeching off you and then finds a new girl when you go home to make money so you can come back to stay with him.

All's good up here in the north. :D

thanks a lot for your reply.

no, i wasn't thinking of wandering around by myself late at night :o . the biggest reason why i asked this was because in finland, where i live and have lived all my life, guys never (and i mean never), unless they are drunk or foreigners or very strange, hit on girls on the streets or pretty much anywhere else except bars. it is a very different environment and culture in here than in asia (fact that my bf has been reminding me a lot recently). even if you look like a supermodel in here you are most likely to be left alone, except, once again, in bars.

so i would do most of the things you mentioned in your post in here, or at least i wouldn't feel that afraid walking around late alone. not saying it's a good idea anywhere, but i have done it in here and never got harassed by anyone.
