My gf talks a lot, and I used to use mao-mao packages, which work out to be 0.75 baht/min including VAT. She is on the smartphone package (200 baht/mo), but she rarely uses sms or internet. Does a lot of talking. So now I want to switch her and the shop phone over to a package where she can talk for extended periods on any network

I would say she can talk for anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours daily. It has been closer or greater than 2 hours since her mom was in an accident a week ago.

I'm ok on the, We want to keep the existing AIS numbers. Both are 1-2 call freedom sim.

The best I found so far is here:

http://www.ais.co.th.../promotion.html Pro "Toh Yok Gang" 19 baht/mo and 1 baht first min/ 0.25 baht for each additional minute ALL networks for 20 hour period 10 p.m. – 6 p.m.:. A sister plan Pro "Wan Yen" is similar, but no monthly charge, and 2 baht/min. I wanted to verify that existing customers can switch to this plan. I didn't see a code to sign up. angry.png

And of course, I am open to suggestions. preferably prepaid, but post paid is ok if the cost justifies the paperwork. Thanks.

Edit: is there a way to check the number to see if it is AIS/DTAC/True/Hutch/Cat? Some promotions are extended to within carrier, but how would one know the number they call is within the carrier?

I think pre-paid promotions are your best bet. Most post-paid plans are lucky to get you much below 1 baht/min. Also you want her on the same network as most of the people she typically calls.

AIS Buffets: http://www.ais.co.th/12call/en/pro-Buffet.html

Also be aware that some offer a special rate to a single, designated number on-net. DTAC/Happy have:

http://www.happy.co.th/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=106&Itemid=424〈=en

Another DTAC promo: http://www.happy.co.th/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=249&Itemid=423〈=en

But all of these require some planning, discipline and restraint, so maybe just better to budget 2,000 baht/month for her calling?

Since we have the storefront now, we need something good for all networks, although the family is split about 50/40 ais/dtac.

She doesn't talk that much (does she?) 500 baht should be good enough. The buffets are interesting, but would prefer something that has no monthly fee and . before we got the smartphone plan, she had flat 1bt/min. I had freedom sim 2bt first min, 0.5 baht for each minute after. Neither had any monthly fees. It seems that you are unable to just cancel a call plan and revert back to a previous plan. You MUST switch to a different plan.

edit: I do want to know if walking into AIS / telewiz shop gives you more choices of plans. Seems like the eService online is limited in switching plan capability (not all available plans are shown). I will double-check also with the *777 method.

After looking extensively at each plan, so far the best everyday plans where you keep your existing sim/phone # are either the buffet or grammy if you use sms a bit more. I ended up switching to a plan where it was just 1.50 baht 24 hours. Then the gf will just use the mao-mao 150 baht for 20 days 200 minutes. This works out to 0.75 baht/min (inc VAT) all networks. She always uses it up anyway and knows to re-add immediately.

The only other options for existing customers the WAP (mobileLife) packages are good if they have any left. You may run into technical errors trying to switch. Insist that customer service ask their techs to look at the mobilelife site if you are unable to add package. Or maybe they have other promotion for existing customers you just have to look out for them. The other option for new customers or if you buy a new sim are much better for voice: http://www.ais.co.th.../promotion.html

Prices for domestic phone calls using Cellphones in Thailand are quite "high" compared to many other markets. Is it because of high costs in building out the infrastructure?

I am also looking for super-cheap phonecalls. I love to call free or almost free.

Another thing, SMS is "very expensive" here.

At the moment I have a "iPhone (Free Size) package including 300 minute calls and 300 SMS and "Free" 3G - paying THB599 + VAT per month. That is reasonable, though not Fantastic.

In my home country (Norway) they have promotions at the moment; Pay equ. to THB1000, and get 20,000 minutes, 20,000 SMS and 5GB data - and unlimited free phone calls within the same network!

You should consider yourself lucky. That TreuMove (H) iPhone Free Size plan has been significantly reduced, now 300 min/0 SMS/ 2GB data as TrueMove tries to make some money.

Those TalkMore plans are interesting, but the plans I saw were about on par with MVNOs in developed markets; FWIW, Telenor also 'owns' DTAC here.

There is no wholesale market here, perhaps owing to legal and cultural factors, so no MVNOs? (There are some data-centric MVNOs here, so a little bit of a wholesale market there.)

There are always promotions here, and provided you are disciplined you can reduce your calling costs on the order of 25%, but it does require quite a bit of work. Also be aware of any 'rounding' (of talk-time up to he next 10 sec or 1 min!) the provider or promotion might utilize which can almost instantly negate any promotional benefits.

I still see the 599+ package on their website, but maybe its outdated. You never know with companies here in Thailand :)

http://www.truemove.com/iPhone/en/price.html

I just cancelled a Ipad package, its small amount, but for me its more of a principle.

Will cancel soon the Iphone package also, even if i have to pay more with AIS or DTAC. I dont like the way True has been harassing DTAC (Telenor) claiming its a "foreign" company...... Stupid argument if you ask me.

If you read the terms and conditions you will notice that this plan ended ~ 31 August 2011.

BTW, it used to be even better; there was no fair0use cap and people were tethering 100 GB/month!
