International Sms

Returning to LOS after a 6-month travel found that have forgotten a number of very basic things. One of them is how to send international SMS from 1-2-call phone? And what to answer to a usual Thai greeting "Have you eaten?"

Yep... so for a sms to a Thai mobile, it would look like +66 1 333 8989, without the spaces. For the US, it would be something like +1 333 393 3933. In other words, it's just like making a direct international call. It seems like it's 5 baht/sms.

Colliqual answer: gin laew krub (I've eaten)

More formal: tahn riab roy laew krub (I've eaten already)

It's a lot like the US habit of saying "how are you today?"... you don't really need a direct answer.

An international SMS sent from a 1-2-Call pre-paid SIM/phone in Thailand to a mobile phone outside of Thailand is 9 baht plus 7% VAT. SMS'e sent from outside Thailand to 1-2-Call pre-paid SIM/phone are free for the reciever, that is no charge for the 1-2-Call subscriber. The sender is billed according to their individual plan. From the U.S.A. international SMSes range from five to ten U.S. cents per SMS, but specific plans might offer free or even more expensive international messaging options.

Note that for those having a hard time finding the "+" symbol it can be replaced with "00" (zero, zero). So using the the previouly mentioned example, +1 333 393 3933, 00 333 393 3933 would yield the same result. Voice calls are the same, except that you can use the lower cost prefixes like 008 and 009, replacing the "+" or "00", followed by the country code and phone number.

The + is easy to find, just press the 0 a bit longer.

A small correction, however, from Thailand you dial 001 (instead of +),

not 00....

Also worth noting also that you can make international CALLS cheaper by using 009, 008, 007 instead of 001 BUT these cheaper options do NOT work sending SMS's

You can type + on any mobile phone network, anywhere in the world!!!

+ is the symbol for international access and it does not matter if the country uses

00 as most do now, or 001 as Thailand does.

The other 007 008 and 009 codes do offer better rates in Thailand.
