Adopting A Burmese Orphan

Featured Replies

A friend from the U.S. asked about the potential for adopting a child in Thailand, who is a refugee from Burma. This person is familiar with plight of refugee children and also wants to adopt, so hoping there is a chance to make this work. Any experiences with adoption in Thailand, specifically with children that might not have official citizenship? I realize this is a tricky situation but hoping to get some feedback. Thanks.

That is probably not possible, but an international adoption starts with an adoption agency in your own country.

Here the problem is that the child is Burmese, so the adoption must be according to Burmese law (and US law as well for the adoption to be recognized by the US).

But search the internet for "Burmese Border Consortium" a NGO in Thailand for Burmese refugees. They should be able to direct you to the right organisations who can give much better information than me.
