January 17, 201214 yr Hi there, I have 3 uni degree's and want to know if its necessary to do a 4 week Tesol course and pay $1500 in order to get a teaching job in bangkok. I would prefer not to do one obviously and any advice is appreciated. Ive heard that some schools do not need a tesol. Are there any issues with this in getting the work permit / teachers licence if I dont have a Tesol certificate? thanks
January 17, 201214 yr I doubt you need a TESOL certificate. I did one online and it took 5 months of writting and test taking. It was a real bitxh, until finished, more than 20 papers on selected subjects. It was too hard - like an MA or something. I ended up with a 60 page teachers portfolio and a couple of TESOL certificates. Also graded = much stress. I believe a TESOL is not so easy - but nice to have I guess. As others have said - we all only take one class - so hard to compare. I was going to say more about Cummunicative Language Teacher (CLT) method - or whatever . Learners need to relax as well. I found that my TESOL learning was a bit difficult. I doubt any non native English speaker could easily do a TESOL course. I still think that learning a second language yourself helps tremendously -as you can feel your students problems better - or something. (might help if it were Thai - for example) It saves so much time. Either way - you should be fine.
January 17, 201214 yr If your female, a job teaching English is so easy to get. Otherwise you might want to make sure you got a nice tie etc.. As others have said - it could be more about how you look - first impression stuff. Also - speaking Thai can make for funny stuff - like how bad your thai is - so relax.
