It might be a good idea to let them know when you're coming.

Gives them time to re-arrange their diaries...

Depends; middle class office workers in Thaland (like myself) typically add a couple days holiday to fill up the space between Songkran and a weekend on either side of it.

However this does not apply to people doing manual labor, those working in shops or staff in entertainment places. Some will visit home on 2 or 3 of the Songkran days, but by no means all.

Songkran this year is Friday-Saturday-Sunday, so that likely means that for office workers there will be the Monday and Tuesday as compensation holidays. Many people will add a couple days before and/or after so you end up with 7-8 days to go on holiday.

For Thai form the rural, Songran meaning visiting parants or the older folks, get the blessing as well so it might take a whole week worth a trip. Some might go as far quit the job altogether if you don't let them have a big holiday. Just hire Burmese or Laos workers as they work harder and don't complain much.

so they will probably have the days after songkran off, that makes sense , guess question is, if they are bkk people or not

Well, I suppose on what type of job they have.

Some factory workers don't get annual leave so a 'week off' is a stretch.

It's generally accepted that Friday 13th thru Monday 16th will be the holidays and possibly Tuesday17th as well (the Thai Visa Calendar notes it as a Substitution Day and a holiday).

Most likely they will return 'home' or where the 'family' is located ... where ever that is.

would thais take off the week before or the week after Songkran weekend,

If they work for themselves they will take as much time as they can afford to take ... apart from that, it would be a rare profession that allows holidays to extend more then the few days I mentioned above wink.png

Oh ... also understand that there are 'Bank holidays' 'Government holidays' and those 'holidays' in the private sector ... and often they are not the same with the private sector getting fewer holidays then the public sector.

Lastly, practise this "Suk son waan Songkran" ... well, at least, that's how I say it and gets lots of smiles cowboy.gif

Oh ... last tip, wear a hat because the sunscreen will be washed off when they rub the powder on your face and think twice about taking cameras and mobiles as they don't mix well with water ... enjoy!
