Great Museums, Attractions Or Festivals In Thailand

A couple of days ago I went to the Lantern Festival in Had Yai. Photo attached. It was really good.

The lanterns are approximately life-sized and are made from a kind of nylon or silk that is stretched over a wire frame. I really recommend this!

And not so long ago, I also visited the Museum of Southern Arts in Songkhla. That too was excellent.

So what are your favorite museums or attractions or festivals or cultural events here in Thailand?

I am especially interested in hearing about lesser-known attractions.

Oh -- and by the way -- it might be nice if we could keep this discussion free of anything whore-related. I really have no desire to hear about the pitiful lifestyles of farangs who have shacked up in Isaan with a bar slut.

I went to a parade of floats made from candle wax in Khorat a few years ago. At first, I thought it was going to be no fun. But it was amazing what they have done with wax!

Curious Craig, is this an annual event?

I'm pretty sure it's a national thing. Wifey says they do it all over the country. I guess these guys work on the floats for almost a year getting them ready for these parades.

It's currently the sweet tamarind festival up here in Phetchabun,I've not been yet but went last year,it's the usual sort of thing many stalls selling any thing from furniture to plants, some great food stalls, some singing, muay Thai shows at night etc etc and of course lots of cheap tamarind,it actually made the tv yesterday they were broadcasting from Khao Khor on the morning show channel 3, its worth a look if in the area but hardly worth a long trek unless you make a few days of it which is recommended as its nice up in the mountains here.

The Candle Festival is to celebrate the beginning of Khao Pansa, the Buddhist Lent.

Ubon Ratchathani's is generally considered to be the best example, with contributors from other countries contributing works; it's a wonderful site, especially the evening before the procession, when the floats are illuminated and based in the park for people to wander around - and take thousands of photos!
