Traffic Police Officers and Police Volunteers suspended over corruption allegations in Jomtien

PATTAYA: -- Two Traffic Police Officers and two Police Volunteers have been suspended following allegations they accepted a bribe in exchange for the release of a drug suspect. The officers were stationed at a Police Box on the Sukhumvit Road close to the Ambassador City Hotel in Jomtien and had set-up a checkpoint on Thursday Morning.

They stopped Khun Jedarin aged 18 on his motorbike and conducted a roadside urine test which he subsequently failed. He was then allegedly told by the officers that in exchange for 5,000 Baht in cash, he would be released without charge. Khun Jedarin then contacted his girlfriend to arrange collection of the money from his parents who decided this was unlawful and contacted Chonburi Police headquarters and the Banglamung Police Chief to investigate the case in conjunction with the Na-Jomtien Police Chief.

Undercover officers were sent to the area around the Police Box and waited for the money to be handed over before they moved in and detained Police Captain Somporn, Traffic Police Sub-Inspector, Police Senior Sergeant Major Wirapon and two Traffic Police volunteers,

There has to be a lot more to this story.

What parents in their right mind would refuse to pay a paltry 5K to get their son off a drugs charge?

There must be some unsavoury relations between father and son, or maybe they think that by reporting the bent coppers, their son will get off the charges...

Who knows? But why didn't the local rag do a better job on investigating what lay behind this unusual turn of events?

What a fanciful suggestion of yours asking that the local paper do some investigating
