BANGKOK CRACKDOWN ON ENTERTAINMENT VENUES

City Police Ordered to Step Up Vice Suppression

BANGKOK: -- A deputy PM has instructed the city police to step up measures to prevent and eradicate drugs and other vices in the area after reports about an increase in Bangkok's entertainment venues with horse racing machines and drug sales.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung delivered drug suppression policies for Bangkok's entertainment venues to commanders and deputy commanders from nine districts under the Metropolitian Police Bureau's jurisdiction.

Chalerm revealed that only 600 of some 1,500 entertainment venues in Bangkok are licensed.

He said some under the jurisdiction of the Makkasan and Huay Kwang police stations are openly selling amphetamine and methamphetamine on their premises.

Some under the jurisdiction of the Phlap Phla Chai 1, Bang Rak, Samrae, Buppharam and Bukkhalo police stations, have horse racing machines and act as illegal lottery bookies.

The deputy PM instructed the city police to seek cooperation from entrepreneurs to immediately inform the authorities of their business rivals' illegal activities.

Moreover, Chalerm also ordered all police stations in Bangkok to step up vice supression by using proactive measures to prevent smuggling of illegal substances and other vices into their areas and emphasize close monitoring of risk groups.

Asked about the proposal to hold drug-related inmates in separate facilities, the deputy PM said he agrees with the idea to hold only major drug kingpins in solitary cells to cut their networks.

He proposed that a particular remand center could be set up as a model to carry out a pilot project.

However, further details of plan will have be to be studied.

Further questioned about Rak Thailand Party leader and party-list MP, Chuwit Kamolwisit's disclosure of information about gambling dens in Bangkok, Chalerm affirmed that the police have already shut down all gambling venues which are openly advertised to the public

The deputy premier went on to say that most gambling venues existing in the capital are not permanent as they usually change their locations frequently.

Chalerm confirmed that he has never protected the national police chief and the city police commissioner over the existence of gambling dens in the capital.

Deal with sex tourists? There are an estimated 2 millions prostitutes in Thailand, 95 percent of them catering to thai people. So sextourism is not an issue, statistically. It's like saying eradicate eating spaghetti among tourists visiting Italy!!!!...Furthermore what's wrong with sex tourism?Without it tourism arrival would plunge - I estimate- around 80 percent.

why dont they just make gambling legal? Like any normal country?

They should first deal with the sex tourists. That's insane

I fully agree that prostitutes cater for the local market first. But you can't deny the prevalence of sex venues for farangs in Bangkok.

And by the way, if you say that 5% of the prostitutes cater for farang (i.e. 100,000 prostitutes based on your calculation), I hardly see how it can concern 80% of the tourists coming to Thailand.

The bankruptcy of the Thai system becomes clearer by the day. Former and current criminals seem to enjoy it to empower the police the rip off working people by simply mentioning drugs. In the last government we had the biggest crook from the South, Suthep pulling the strings which made his head grow like a balloon, now we have Chalerm. Chalerm could better hold a crackdown back home and prevent his sons from abusing other people and murdering policemen. THese idiots seldom come up with plans to build a special prison for their family and colleagues.

Unquote

1. They need to be told? Have they any understanding of the law?

2. If there are 900 unlicenced venues why haven't they been raided and closed down? Or is this a number picked out of thin air?

3. If Mr. Big knows, why don't the local cops know also? Why are the Superintendents and their deputies not charged with dereliction of duty?;

4. See No. 3.

What bull ...how about sorting out the corruption in the Royal Thai Police...yes the first word from RTP is the key but no one in any Government ever in Thailand has the balls to do anything about it

This has to be the hub of bull£hit....next year will be another announcement of a Clamp down on Entertainment venues again, it is called the annual increase of tea money

Nothing to do with balls; it is all about the cash!

Suppressing drugs and illegal gamboling fair play,

but ignoring the equally illegal prositution makes it

another quantum leap of hypocrisy.

Of course hassling 'entertainment venues' is a cash cow, let the tea money flow, and as noted by REM, has the equally good benefit of putting your rivals out of business and your friends in their places, while looking like a public benefactor.

Weasledom of the highest disorder.

Does this mean another 2500 people killed?

Human Rights Watch has branded ousted Thai prime minister “a human rights abuser of the worst kind”

Thaksin’s human rights violations.

Thaksin presided over extrajudicial killings during the notorious “war on drugs”. HRW says 2,500 people were killed during one three-month period at the start of 2003.

Thaksin told the Thai military to employ any means to suppress an insurgency in the south of Thailand.

Thaksin Suppressed the Thai media.

In Nana Plaza , 50 meter from the police station at crossing Sukhumvit - Soi 4 is the police standing NEXT to the gambling table and the horse racing machine ...every day till 2 am ... and they keep doing it ....

Fore sure. Police own many of the bars in and around Nana. I know one of them personally.
