RID confident water level in dams will not contribute to flooding

BANGKOK, 1 February 2012 (NNT) – The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) expressed confidence that the water level in major dams would not cause flooding like the previous year despite additional pressure from the La Niña phenomenon.

RID Deputy Director-General Suthep Noipairoj disclosed that the department has forwarded its water management plan to the Strategic Committee for Water Resources Management (SCWRM). The plan is currently awaiting approval from the committee.

The plan highlights the discharge of water from large dams, particularly the Bhumibol and Sirikit dams. The water level must be lowered to 45% of the dam capacity by 1 May.

However, Mr. Suthep insisted that the release of water from the dams would not send impact to residents at the end of the waterway. He is certain that the RID’s water management plan would be efficient in preventing an inundation, unlike that of last year.

Meanwhile, Bangkok Metropolitan Council Chairman Suthichai Weerakulsunthorn says will propose the establishment of an ad hoc committee to prevent and resolve possible natural disasters at the Council’s meeting on 8 February. The governors of Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan, Nakhon Pathom and Chachoengsao are scheduled to join in the discussion to find a solution to the problem.
