Transport Ministry speeds up preparations for AEC

BANGKOK, 12 February 2012 (NNT) - The Transport Ministry is gearing up Thailand’s transportation and logistics systems with a master plan in preparation for the upcoming ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

Deputy Transport Minister Chatchart Sithipan disclosed that the Transport Ministry is currently in the process of establishing a blueprint to brace the country’s transportation and logistics systems for the establishment of the AEC. Based on the Brunei Action Plan (BAP), Thailand needs to develop the quality of land, railway, water, and air transportations. Its responsibilities include the development of a 6-km section of the Kunming- Singapore Railway which runs between Aranyaprathet and Khlong Luek districts. The construction is scheduled for completion by 2014.

Additionally, the Transport Ministry has been entrusted to carry out a study on impacts of the AEC establishment on all relevant parties, including entrepreneurs from the private sector. Initial studies show the water transportation system is the sector most ready for the AEC compared to other forms of transportation since it is already possesses universal rules and regulations of overseas transportation.

Details of compensation for Southern unrest victims clarified

SONGKHLA, 12 February 2012 (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Yongyuth Wichaidit, together with Justice Minister Pol Gen Pracha Promnog, attended a meeting of the committee tasked with overseeing compensation and rehabilitation for unrest victims in the southern border provinces.

Culture Ministry to propose extra THB200 million for archaeological restoration

BANGKOK, 12 February 2012 (NNT) – The Ministry of Culture is set to request an additional budget of THB200 million from the government to carry out further restorations of flood-damaged archaeological and religious sites.

Minister of Culture Sukumol Kunplome disclosed that the subcommittee on religious and archaeological restoration has reviewed the proposals made by the Fine Arts Department, the Department of Religious Affairs and the National Office of Buddhism, which requested an additional sum of THB200 million from the government, on top of the already-approved THB1.52 billion, in order to restore another 122 religious and archaeological sites damaged by the flood. The additional budget is for the restoration of 25 sites identified by the Fine Arts Department, one site by the Religious Affairs Department and 96 sites by the National Office of Buddhism. The budget proposal will be firstly forwarded to the Flood Recovery and Restoration Committee on Infrastructure and the Flood Recovery and Restoration Committee before being submitted to the cabinet for approval.

Restoration plans not only include the maintenance of the sites' structures, paintings and sculptures, but they will also cover the dredging of moats and canals around the Ayutthaya and Sukhothai Historical Parks, to facilitate the flow of water as a prevention to groundwater seepage and dampness caused by flooding. Additionally, the dredging of moats and canals aims to restore the panoramic surrounding of the historical sites to their previous conditions in the old days.

Dusit Poll: Govt. most efficient in drug eradication, worst in flood solution

BANGKOK, 12 February 2012 (NNT) – The Suan Dusit Poll showed that the government scraped a pass in the public's opinion survey for its determination and performance during its 6-month operation, with the best performance in drug eradication and the worst in flood solution.

Conducted by the Suan Dusit Rajabhat University, the poll disclosed the public's opinion on the Yingluck Shinawatra government’s 6-month performance. Out of a full mark of ten, the people gave the Prime Minister 6.58 for her determination, and 5.95 for her performance. In the meantime, the cabinet as a whole received 5.86 for its determination and 5.82 for its performance. Additionally, 5.16 points were given to the government’s honesty, the lowest mark among the subjects.

Regarding each ministry's performance, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports was rated at the top with the score of 6.01, followed by the Ministry of Education (5.93), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (5.92), the Ministry of Industry (5.91), and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (5.90). The Ministry of Commerce came last with the score of 5.22.

53.67% of the respondents voted drug eradication as the government’s best performance during the past six months, followed by the minimum wage hike with 32.33% in favor. In contrast, 52.01% saw the government's attempt to solve the flood situation as the worst performance, followed by the solution to resolve price hike (36.48%).
