Mekong Catfish In Bkk Klong?

Actually, it's more like a pond...but its got klongs connecting it. Two days ago I threw an old loaf of bread in the water to feed the fish and this huge, gigantic catfish broke the surface and ate the entire loaf. It was 10' long absolutely no exageration...and it was a catfiash because it had whiskers.

Any chance it was a Mekong Catfish like Ive see on TV? Just surpised to see such a large fish in a city "pond"

Mekong catfish dont have wiskers. I know i caught many.

Yeaph... You are right, plenty of them, around here within the klongs and/or ponds.

But are you eating them, Khun Rob?

Not me... I hate their mud taste!

Is this him?

Thailand have the largest freshwater fish in the world, they can and do take chunks out of people

.

Think you will find they also dont have teeth, i been upto my armpit almost to get hooks out, at most they give you a squeeze.

Indeed, what a crazy thing to say that they take chunks out of people.

Of course i saw his show, i love fishing but most people realize the guy is selling a show and mixes facts with fiction. The idea of such a fish clamping on your leg an pulling you down is crazy.

I caught many of those fish (too bad not as big as in that picture) and i probably will try to catch a few more (and release on saturday)

Thank for your "diplomatic" answer. --Everybody loves a little bit of fiction don't you think so.. Or you don't like bear grills as well. ;-)

For me i am interested in fishing in thailand since i saw his show and since i lost my feelings aside about the poor fish being hurt. Any suggestions for a beginner with a lot of time?

First off there is a fishing forum here in Thai visa. If you got a driving license you can go to Bungsamran for 400bt a rod. If you think that is too much you can try shadow lake its 150 bt a rod. Bait can be bought in both locations. Rods can be rented there too.

In the end i would buy your own rod. Bungsamran is expensive if you dont have a Thai drivers license then it cost 1000bt. But Bungsamran is the easiest place to catch real big fish. Shadow lake is a cheaper and harder alternative. I like both lakes but if i want many fish id like BSR. If i want a bit more piece and quiet and a bit more natural scenery i go to shadow lake.

I would advise against fishing in the klongs. You can also fish with lures for other kind of fish. But the catfish are caught at the locations i talked about. There are of course many other smaller lakes with usually pla sawai (smaller and weaker version) catfish.

You don't want to mess with the big sawaii in Gnao nam. I know they are only 20kg but they look like they can break arms if they hit you with their tail or knock you out cold with a slap to the head!

I've caught a few sawaii there expecting a fish 3 times the size to surface. Unofficially the biggest one of these caught was 44kg. During loi krathong you see lots of catfish when food is thrown into the canals and rivers.

I do think many of the big sawai are gone, i see a lot more small bugs there now. But there are still big bug's i do encounter these too but they are rarer then b4. Had one on my long rod with thin line there. It meant that after half an hour my line broke.
