Borax Powder

Featured Replies

Want to buy some borax powder to use for long term outdoor insect control but having a tough time finding any. Shops keep wanting to sell me proprietary products which are ridiculously expensive. Any ideas?

Subscribed, as all I've found is what the chemists sell. It also makes a good laundry deodorizer!

Ask at Nova Art Jewelry Shop. They have a big can of it in their workshop and must have bought it somewhere. http://www.nova-collection.com/

You might try one of the chemical supply shops. There's Union Science which is on Doi Suthep just slightly to the east of the intersection with Nimmanheiman.

That is where I've bought, among other chemicals for fun, food prep, or other uses, and likewise would guess Greenside has purchased from there also. We are looking for industrial grade, not reagent grade, borax. Like the type I've purchased for over 30 years to cure salmon roe;

Actually, I was going to try there today as a pharmacist directed me there last night. Despite a quick bit of Googling, I'm still not quite sure which kind I need for the insect control experiments - most people simply talk of using borax rather than a specific grade. I'll let you know how it goes.

what insects are you trying/wanting to control?

I have a deadly product made by British company Solignum soilguard.(though the label is in thai) i thought it was expensive at 500bt a litre but when you see it is deadly at 1 part to 200parts water, i realised i didnt need a full litre.

its for termites and beetles. and generally for spraying in the soil, garden etc .i got it to treat my bamboo fence and its effective immediately. sadly a consequence was that the run off went into my pond and killed 200 fish..a mistake i need to avoid next time.

however..Global house has this product and many others.

for cockroaches though i find my trainers and trying to kick them into the busy road very effective.

I don't think it matters what grade you use if you aren't using it for food prep.

Ants and termites are the target. Solignum is good but it acts as a repellent whereas what I'm after is something the little blighters will take back to the nest to feed the queen.

sounds like you need to gift wrap something with a bow...how about a can of petrol and a lighter, that should do the job, but you need the tracker dogs on the case first.

I don't think ants are going to take it back to the nest with them. It's not food. I used to use boric acid for cockroaches and the way it worked was the powder got on the insects and the insects would lick it off. I used to get some stuff in the supermarket. It came in small transparent plasic traps. That was poisoned food that the ants would take back with them to the nest. Very effective.

You have mix it with something the ants like to eat and that varies depending on the kind of ant in question.

Boracic acid and a little sugar and some old cooking oil in a approx 10% water solution seems to work for all the ants and various insect crawlies which frequent our abode. Bought the powder in China town Penang. Anything else ..we just use an oil based spray bomb.

Now it is dry here we are being invaded by windblown tiny little ticks...bought a little bottle of stuff at vets last year for dogs, dilute at about 1% with water and spray around...smells like kerosine.

AND now we have two bees nests in our roof overhang ( almost inaccessible) right over my beer drinking lounge chair...I just want to leave them be although wife wants to climb into attic for the honey..okay dear I will catch you when you fall through the giproc.....
