I've never seen one with a coiled element in Thailand. We went looking for one a while ago - albeit one with a "solid" element - for the sister in law who has all aluminum pots and pans. They seem to have disappeared from the shelves now that the induction units are all the rage. Unfortunately the induction units won't work with the aluminum cookware.

I can find the standard electric hot plates all over. Unfortunately, all I have found have an "enclosed" element:

Under the "burner", the element is ceramic. This probably dissipates the heat better, but doesn't suit my purpose. I have also found that the element's attachment to the electricity source is a bit flimsy.

I can't use the induction plates because I am disassembling it to use in my home built smoker, not using it for cooking, per se.
