Is This Mosquito Coil Working Or Am I Just Poisoning Myself?

Really, here I sit on my patio, smelling the thing, but across my patio table over the other chair, I see about twenty mozzies all having at it.

Are they on me? No. But does that mean the coil is working, or they just don't like the sangsom coming out of my pores?

I just wonder if the coil is giving me worse long term damage than a couple of mozzie bites (or the Sangsom for what thats worth)?

Once you get the Chikungunya, you'll know that it would have been great to use the coils.

I got it in Phuket, not a fun ride. I was lucky to get rid of it in few months.. but those months I was like an grumpy old man. You'd probably end up being an zombie powered by Sangsom.

You're lucky! I had Chikungunya for about two and a half years! I think mosquito repellant probably works better than coils though.

A combination of both coils and repellent,as well as the old electric tennis racket.

Bang bang bang.

I had it too. I think I got bit on May 31 2008. I felt fine, and left for home in the US. Got home with no problems. About June 2 at 3AM, I awoke, and felt like I had been hit by a bus, maybe a few buses. Went to work, came home a few hours later and spent the next 4 days in bed. Everything hurt, including my hair. I was lucky, and back to normal in about 7 days. I understand it can last years, like jimi007. That would really suck.

I'm just younger than you :)

When I got it I talked to a friend who is an physician and got the same thing few years before. He said that the length of the symptoms come with the age. He is 50+ years and said that he had to inject cortisone every few weeks to keep the pain away after few years.

Then again. I understood that it's one time thing. When it's over, it will not come back again.

On my home I'm using 230V electrical repellents, which heat up an liquid and last for 60 days (or nights). Those seems to work pretty well even if I'm living in the middle of jungle with lots of mosquitoes around. Works fine for indoors, but I guess not so well for outdoors.

I was 54 when I contracted it. And your friend is right about it lasting longer the older you are. One study I read said it could last 3 to 5 years. But it seems most doctors know little about it. At one point I was taking hydromophone for the pain. I was given prednisone before that and I swelled up like a balloon! I certainly hope I'm over it now. I thought I was over it before, but then I would wake up in the morning with swelling, joint and tendon pain again. It moves around to different parts of the body. Definitely not something I would want to ever go through again!

My house is screened and the Or Bor Tor sends a crew around a couple of times a year and "smokes" outside all the houses in my area now. I've heard of a couple of people catching Dengue in the neighborhood over the past couple of years as well. The Aedes mosquito is responsible for spreading both diseases. It breeds in fresh rain water from what I've read.

I am taking prednisone for a different problem and have had no sweeling. They said I would gain weight. I have lost 4 kilos, had no swelling and the only adverse efffect they said I would have is stomach troubles that antacids take care of. It also got rid of some troublesome eczema that I had had for years.

I got tons of energy that I haven't had for years. It must effect different people diferent ways.

GOM - maybe you need to burn more than one coil at a time, spaced around a bit. BTW, do electric zappers work on mozzies?

I had Dengue fever whilst living in Singapore 8 years ago, wasn't pleasant at all but i'll spare you the details.

Doctor told me not to leave stagnant water around the house, i.e flush unused toilets regularly, don't leave the dishes to soak for long periods of time, don't over water house plants and have water residue in the pot etc etc common sense precautions to keep them at bay and stop them breeding....

So consensus is the coils do work?

And yes, I use the Baygon, but can't believe the stuff I'm smelling isn't toxic, but anyway, I guess I'll carry on with them as for sure don't want the dengue or the funny C word.

Jimi007 next time I see you, I'll need you to pronounce that one for me. Yell it at me if you pass on the bike, that'll be funny.

"Hey Grumpy, Cha-Chinga "!!!!

Yes they do, i brought a weather proof one back from Australia, we still use

personal repellent, insect spray and coils on occasions

The cheap 300 baht ones you can buy here are not very effective

The more expensive ones work but are not suitable for outside use

That's the thing with Predisone. It has a wide variety of effects. It's a wonder drug, used for decades, but has powerful side effects, especially if used long-term. It's worth persisting with the side effects if it's working well for your original problem.

Make sure you keep your salt (sodium really) intake low. Should help with swelling. Also depends on dose and how much of a cowboy your doctor is.

OMG it is all toxic!!!! Very toxic. I am surprised someone would think Bayon is ok! I sprayed some Baygon as a last resort the other day and swear I had shortness of breath. I think they all have deet. Try spraying sketelone on some thing plastic or acrylic? Dont get it on your favourite sun glasses either. Don't Thais burn coconuts to repell mozzies?

The purple coils are pretty and smell nice but still toxic!

I had chikunkunya too and best thing is now I dont have to worry about it but it seems as if no one has it anymore?

I use these natural mosquito coils from Thailand, cheap enough and natural spray too.. and don't forget a fan works wonders too!

They don't smell perfumey but most perfumey smells are chemicla anyway... They dont smell bad either just a bit smokey.

you can place an order online and pick it up in a few days in Nai Harn too at the Book Cafe near Sinbi

I have an electric device that has some lights in it to attract mosis and the a fan to suck them in where they die from dehydration. It's very quiet, no electrocution sounds, works on mosis of all sizes. They used to sell them for like 800thb at amorn but seems they stopped stocking them. They are still avail at home pro, power buy, and the like but they are from 2000-3000thb. I will try and take a picture of mine and post later if needed.

quick search on google found this picture which is very close..

Do you know of any stores in Pattaya that sell those natural coils? I have never seen any coils other than the chemical ones which I refuse to use. 100% it is not healthy to inhale the smoke from those.

Are they like the lemongrass sprays - that don't work?!

I just found a site that sells the Mosquito Magnet and the black hole I mentioned above. The Mosquito Magnet is supposed to be the best thing around for catching mosquitoes but comes with a hefty pricetag.

I bought a 'black hole' from HomePro a few years ago and gave it away a couple of years later...

Yes, it did catch mossies - but many more ignored it and bit me, so I had to use a mossie coil or a deet-based repellent anyway.

They do work .. you can order them online and they will ship to you no problem. They are a health food shop in THailand and not have worry customs and also they ship to all of Thailand.

Yes I have found them to work fine.. made of bergamot and pomelo and..
