Hi Guys

Will be travelling from Kao San Rd to Pattaya with my son on Sunday April 15th. I haven't done this trip since 1998 and it cost about £50 back then booked through a travel agent in BKK. Just so I know what to expect, how much am i looking at and what is the best way to arrange it?

Cheers

taxis to hua hin from bangkok are 1500B and that is further than pattaya....... plus we once booked it through an agent, and found out from the driver that he was getting 800B, and the agent pocketed 700B..... so if you shop around or know somebody, you can get some great prices

1000B is the going price

We pay 1000b (including tolls) from Sukhumvit 71 to Patts and that is in a friend's taxi so i would imagine from Khao San Rd would be a bit more.

For sure don't use a travel agent on KSR. I've had problems there before. Flag down a taxi and you're all set! If you have a decent hotel, they will get one for you. I would guess 1200B or so.

There are thousands of mini vans leaving from KSR every day for about 300 - 500 baht

For 2 people, a taxi is a better way to go. Last time I did a mini van, it was packed, the driver drove like crazy, didn't use the toll road (pocketed the money?) and they stopped somewhere else to pick some stuff up. Took a lot longer than required. I'd rather use the bus from Ekamai.

That is also true. I do have a feeling that a street side taxi will not do it from KSR these days for under 1500 baht for sure. Still if the OP has some loot then yes much less of a head-ache to the "suicide mini vans"

Right. I'm no fan of those mini vans. Last time I took one on KSR, it picked me up at my guesthouse and then proceeded to cruise all over the place picking up others. We didn't get out for an hour!!!

You're probably right on regarding the price. Especially from KSR and the recent rise in fuel prices.

When I was going to Patt before my gf and me bought a car, I was always using Mr. T taxi. It was 800 or 900 baht I believe (including highway) and that was the same rate from various locations in BKK, so o suppose it was a flat rate BKK to Pattaya. They pick you up from where you ask them. 0812587716 is the phone number. Last time I used them though about a year ago so their rate might have changed.

Anything over a 1000 is a rip off I think.

Dont know what your accomadation arrangements are but there are some Hotels that have properties in both Bangkok and Pattaya and if staying with them will transfer you for FREE

Thanks for all the replies guys. About 1000B seems to be what I am looking at. I'm staying at the Rikka Inn in KS Road so can ask them too.

I can't be bothered going on a mystery tour before leaving Bangkok so will avoid the minibuses.

The Dusit Thani hotel has a daily mini bus transfer from its Bangkok hotel (next to Silom MRT station) to Pattaya North (near Dolphin roundabout). Non guests can use the service for about 200 baht (at least nobody asks you if you are guest or not, maybe bona-fide guests are free?)

WOW - KSR to Pattaya you are going to get screwed!

Why dont you taxi to Victory Monument for B60 and take a minivan for next to nothing OR barring that you can take the 511 bus for one hour to Ekamai and take a bus which run every 15mins.

BAD BAD plan.

HAH there is now way some shonky taxi on KSR is going to take to to Pattaya for B1000. Not only that but I would not be suprised if he hands you off to another driver -and maybe a really shitty car as well AND the trip takes an extra hour AND you feel really paranoid becasue of the extra driver, wait time, nonsense well they get it all together. Your laziness is really leaving you wide open for trouble.

Years ago, at least three it cost B800 to get from PTY to the airport. I knew cheap charlies who would flag down cabs in wee hours and grab them for 650-700. I think you are dreaming if you think you are going to get a cab essentially an hour away from the airport for B1000.

If you take a shark standing around waiting for riders he will no doubt gouge you I do not see the typical driver agreeing to take you down to BKK. Many will not know how to get back up OR may not want to be in thequeue for the return. Many taxis are driven by 2 men in shifts as well. But hey - its all possible.

Agreed. Minibuses are a nightmare. Victory Monument is a traffic mess. The taxi might be 1500B, but it will be door to door, just you and your partner, and AC all the way.

If you run into problems finding a good one, PM me and I'll call one of my (many) wife's uncles who drive Taxis in Bangkok. All good drivers, all with fair prices. But they speak limited English.

I think asking your hotel is a good way to go also. And if desired, check out a few a day or so before. You can always arrange these things in advance. Better than standing on a street corner trying to negotiate with all your luggage.

If it wasn't on the weekend you can get the train from the main train station not too far from KSR. Probably about 50 B each for the train fare. It takes about 4 hours and only goes first thing in the morning, but you could go straight from a night out and sleep on the train. I have no idea where the train station in Pattaya is though.

Forget the taxi to Pattaya, I go every week, down and back the same day, just get a taxi to Ekkamai BUS STATION and take the bus, 113 BHT about 20 or 30 minutes longer than the taxi, if you get a loony taxi driver he will scare the living daylights out of you, mini vans are worst, and very dangerous, you can get a pick up at the bus station at Pattaya to take to any place in Pattaya for 200 BHT all up under 400BHT including the taxi to Ekkamai, bus to Pattaya, and pick up at the other end, and safe and relax and enjoy the trip. it is the first window at Ekkamai for the bus. have a good trip.

I agree the bus from Ekkamai is the way to go for value for money.

If you do want a taxi, do *not* even talk to *anyone* soliciting or just hanging out anywhere near KSR waiting for business.

Get out to a main road and start *flagging* down taxis. I'd say ß1200 would be fair these days for a late-model comfortable taxi, I think it would take you 20+ conversations to get that down to a thousand, and you should pay the tolls.

Don't argue with the guys, just smile stay friendly and wave them on to flag down the next one. Doing it at a low-traffic time of day would be best IMO after 9pm or before 7am.

I second that,

I took the ekkemai bus trip before, well worth the money and the wait. Unless you know someone who knows someone who drives a freelance taxi the bus is the way to go if you want to go cheap charlie.

Flag one down. One in good shape.

Offer 900, and settle for 1,000 Baht toll included.

Refuse, flag another one.

Flag one down the day before you need it, you will be in a better position to barter and not have your luggage with you.

Wow! More replies than I was expecting - thanks guys and many options to think about.

I did think about the bus from Ekkamai. I've done ythat trip before too many years ago and didn't know if I could be bothered busing it with luggage but I suppose I could give it a go.

Yes, £50, back in 1998... first time in Thailand and I didn't have a clue. I thought I was getting a good deal having compared the price with a 2hr trip in a taxi in England! I'm wiser now.

Thanks again for the helpful advice.
