insertmembernamehere
How do we cook Mekong giant catfish? Available in Tesco, the meat is very, very oily. I tried pan frying it, but had to keep putting it back on the griddle because it was too fatty tasting. Eventually, after cooking a lot of fat off as oil, I could eat it. There must be a better way. What is it?

It seems to be working today. Here is the Mekong giant catfish meat: Fatty meats such as duck are often served with or cooked in a sweet friut sauce to cut through the oil. Maybe you could try poaching the flesh in coconut milk for a few minutes before discarding then finish off in swwet and sour or tamarind sauce. Or a Rendang curry sauce with pineapple. Tropicalevo
A couple of other great "English" breakfast places which are well worth a try in Bangrak are Bangrak Cafe (a couple of doors down from Cafe Uno) and Petcherat Marina. Petcherat Marina also does the best burgers I have had on the island too. Quick update on Bangrak Cafe - another good breakfast there this morning. The mini-monty is good value and a good meal. 130 baht for :- 2 eggs, 1 bacon, 1 sausage, two toast, beans, small oj and a coffee. Great way to start the day.
Samuiclaudia
Best Roast Dinner in Maenam is Mick's Bar and Bungalows. Soi 5 Maenam. About 1 mile in towards the jungle. Good food and lots of it. Great atmosphere. Reasonably priced drinks. Peaceful environment. Available from about 2pm. http://www.tripadvis...187593-Reviews- Mick_s_Bar_Bungalows-Mae_Nam_Koh_Samui_Surat_Thani_Province.html
nanapong
Tried out that new place "Steak & More" just near lights at Maenam yesterday. 120 Baht CheeseBurger wasn't bad for the price. Went back in the evening to try out the steak. It was like chewing on leather, except it was virtually raw not overcooked. It was only 189 Baht but I was hoping to uncover a gem. I will go back and try the Thai food, the staff are nice ,the burger was pretty good and the shakes were great. Prices pretty cheap. They have an air-con dining option too. Well what do you expect for 189B. It'll be the local shit meat ,the sort you'd feel embarassed giving your dog. Good heavens , you're going back for more. As mentioned "hoping to uncover a gem", no expectation, it didn't happen. You never know sometimes, considering 100 metres up the road Twins do a decent steak for 60B more. "embarrassed giving my dog"? Dogs eat their own vomit and like their own and other dogs a*rseholes, I don't think my face would turn to a red hue and I'd bow my head in shame upon offering a dog any form of steak. Thanks for your input.
Tropicalevo
I am getting a hankering for a decent Sunday Roast. Quite a few of the recommended places have moved on - any tasty suggestions? I would prefer the north end of the island. If anyone recommneds Lamai - a nearby location for parking would be useful too . (I do not get out much ) Edited September 26, 2012 by Tropicalevo

Boater
For Lamai, you could try Gilda's Guest House, run by a UK Lady, dont think you are going to get more authentic then her Roast Dinner http://www.facebook.com/GildasGuestHouse
williamrobson
Best Indian food in Lamai goes too..... India Live now moved close to the lady boxing area just another 50m up the one way system. They have an offer on at the moment Chicken tika Marsala, Plain rice, poppadom, garlic nan and a beer for just 220 and it was delicious. So delicious I thought I would share it with you lot.
ShannonCuller
We are looking for a great breakfast place serving western and Thai dishes to become our Sunday morning staple. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Tropicalevo
Angelas Bakery - Maenam does great homemade food - nice clean environment. A/c or you can sit outside. (Child friendly) I am not sure what time she opens. Not many places doing breakfast at 7 am (apart from hotels). A good French breakfast is the French Bakery at the traffic lights on the ring road just south of Tesco Lotus. Open at 7.30 am last time that I tried it. Crystal Restaurant on Choengmon Beach does good Thai and Western food - again, not sure what time it opens. (Very child friendly) Frenchy's restaurant in Ban Rak does good food and has an intersting menu. A favourite of my guests is the BBC at Big Buddha. (Child friendly, but no dogs) Another favourite used to be Secret Garden in Ban Rak - but now under new ownership and a different menu so I need to re-visit to try it out. ThailandBert
If you are feeling opulent then the Centara on Chawang beach road takes some beating. You name it and they have it there for you to help yourself. Also heard good things about the Bangrak cafe if it is a full English you are after. There used to be a very good one that was a sponsor but I think he had to go back home.
starcandle
Your not that far from Bangrak, Bangrak cafe located next door to the Hyperbaric chamber is good for both western and Thai food, it's run by a nice Thai lady called Am, and you can eat alfresco or inside in the air con, good menu and opens early for breakie. If it's Sunday roast your looking for, 2 good options here, 1 Shakespear pub on the ghost road, traditional style English boozer with a good host Joe (from Covenrty) steady away Sunday roast, or if you would like a roast on the beach, then I would recommend Pureshores, located on the beach at Plailam, next door to the water treatment plant, they also have a small swiming pool with swim up Bar. Another option for later in the Day after 6pm, try the Premier Sports Bar located opposite the Samui Mermaid resort, their home made pies are good and specialise in traditional beer battered Fish n Chips, I was in there last night for the football and treated myself to one of there home made Vanilla slices. hope this helps

SCB Hahaha, that's typical for Thailand but unusual for Angela's to order one thing and the cook thinks you need something else. Angela is a top notch place though! You still have the whole menu to work through! Edited September 30, 2012 by Rooo

williamrobson
I went to Angelas Bakery after hearing so much about it on this topic. To be honest I wasn't impressed I found the standard and service wasn't up to much. I ordered some bread to go with my meal 60b for 2 slices of bread! And the mash potato was quite wet and lumpy.
