JoelC
"The mother will return from Russia and be re-united with her daughter" Was she a mail order bride...... and the daughter will be ripped from his arms and end up in her mothers arms who she does not really know and most likely end up back in Russia, then eventually in Pattaya. What a life for the poor innocent girl. Ummm.... OK, I will ask. Pattaya? <deleted>? He's making a Joke that Russian girls with bad family lives often grow up to be prostitutes, and some of them get shipped off to Thailand to end up in Pattaya . The real sad thing though is that even if that were the case. Pattaya is a hell of a lot better place to be than the oppressive place that is Russia and The Ukraine. No matter what your method of transport, your best off doing anything to get out of Russia unless you have very wealthy parents and even then its still a terrible place to suffer. There's a good reason they drink so much Vodka!
wana
. Sheriff Kevin Walsh said he did not know how the FBI tracked them down in Thailand. a law enforcement sheriff has no idea how to track a kidnapper who has been identified to the authorities ? first ,they check his passport number in the central database, then they know the last time he flew and into which city Unless he traveled from one country to another. His original desination was aparently England. No "central database" exists which tracks that. You may be surprised to learn many minor roads which cross between Canada and the USA are un-manned. When this guy fled 5 years ago Americans didn't even need a passport to travel to Canada, Mexico, the Carribean, etc. then ,check his atm .credit cards and see where he has been withdrawing cash ,then you have his neighbourhood /areas he frequents (say sukhumvit rd etc ) Maybe he used cash. he hasnt been using the cash in his pockets for 5 years and airlines do not forget which passport holders they carry immigration must have issued him and the girl a visa defend them al you like but it looks like pretty incompetent policework if my child was kidnapped i wouldnt be happy with taking 5 years to figure out she was taken to thailand

The sheriff didn't say that he didn't know how to track someone down. He said that he does not know specifically how the FBI did it in this particular case. It could have been one of the methods you mentioned, or it could have been a tip from a family member, a phone tap, or a hundred other possibilites. With your attention to detail may I suggest you stick to your day job. Edited March 15, 2012 by PS3Geek

If committed and of means, documents in varied aliases would be procured, passport, credit cards, etc. He would be cogniscent of paper trails and have access to funds from alternate sources. The fact is it's possible to stay under the radar, it just takes money, prep and commitment. Edited March 15, 2012 by cobra

The sheriff probably knows that the FBI couldn't find the space shuttle if it landed on top of the Pentagon, while the rest of us are prone to think that the FBI really possesses an aptitude called intelligence. Plenty of people knew where this guy was all along, it just took five years to get the attention of law enforcement, and that was a real wonder. More likely is that the media was required to give the FBI credit to save face, that's standard operating procedure if you want to stay in the business.

MILT
I have a friend that was going to do the same when he and his wife split. He came to Thailand met a nice Thai Lady (Registered Nurse) and made a good life here. One day he told me was going to fly back home and nab his son. I spent everyday for days trying to reason with him that in the end his son would suffer the results of his emotional state. Well after around 2 years he approached his ex and suggested that they share their son and allow him to experience a different culture. After 2 years of requesting his son live part of the year in Thailand he bought her and his son a ticket. The rest is history. My friends son has now lived in Thailand for 8 years. Speaks and writes Thai. The Thai people that know him love him dearly!!! Sometimes patience and time is the best solution.

When this guy fled 5 years ago Americans didn't even need a passport to travel to Canada, Mexico, the Carribean, etc. Is that still the case? I know after 9/11 they started closing many of those roads. I've seen a few stories discussing towns which straddle the border where the people used to be able to walk back and forth in town and now they've blocked off the roads and force everyone to go through a immigration checkpoint. then ,check his atm .credit cards and see where he has been withdrawing cash ,then you have his neighbourhood /areas he frequents (say sukhumvit rd etc ) Maybe he used cash. People also forget we're talking about international transactions. He likely moved his money into a Thai bank account, and may have laundered it through a number of banks in other countries. Even if for some reason he kept his bank accounts active in the United States and accessed them in Thailand, the full details of the transactions (such as ATM locations) is likely not relayed back to the US bank, but kept by the Thai bank that processed the transaction. It takes quite a bit of time and effort for American law enforcement to get access to bank records in other countries, and this wasn't exactly a high priority case. maccaroni man
I can only express my opinion of the justice system in the USA regarding a fathers rights. In my exper. we have none, oh sure they give plenty of lip service but do zero to protect fathers from the mothers. I have been on the dead beat dad list which opened all sorts of legal action against me but when my x would not allow me to see my son and moved (kidnapped him) the courts did nothing to help me. I often times daydreamed of doig a runner with my kid if i was ever able to find him. I had to wait for him to find me when he was 16 some 14 yrs later. I missed his entire youth! bkk_mike
I'm willing to bet the FBI had tracked him to Thailand five years ago. However Thailand is known as a major hub in the production of fake documents. (As Thai law basically only makes it illegal to copy Thai documents, you can get fake IDs for other countries relatively easily here...) i.e. There would be no proof from his arrival in Thailand 5 years ago that he would still be here. I'm also willing to bet he was either doing a long overstay, or doing visa runs on a fake passport. As for cash - if he had planned in advance to take his kid out of the US, he probably took a pile of cash at the same time. (The failure to say how he was caught could simply mean that he had finally run out of cash...)
tropo
Why is it that a wife from another country has to be a mail order bride ? Lots of people travel the world and meet locals , I have ex military friends that have wives from the Philippines, Mexico, France, Russia, Brazil and Thailand, none of them are mail order brides. Posted with Thaivisa App http://apps.thaivisa.com Yeah, and "mail order" went out about 15 years ago. Why do people continue to use this asinine term. Popular Post wilsonf
I know the guy only had visitation rights and should not have taken the child. In the UK everything is biased towards the mother, if she leaves the family home with the children and the father tries to trace them, he will just be told by the Police (if they know where they are), that they are 'Safe', If in the same situation the father leaves the family home with the childen, he will be pursued by the police, and when found the children will be returned to the mother, and the father faces charges. This is in a situation where the couple are married, still living together, and no custody orders are in place.(I am not speaking from personal experience) My wife left with my two children in July 2002, my son was six and my daughter 10, I haven't seen or spoken to them since August 2002, and not for the want of trying. Now I understand they don't want to see me, no doubt this is because of the daily dose of poison a mutual friend told me they had been fed by my vindictive ex wife, who has emotionally abused my children by indoctrinating them against the father who thinks about them every day,and loves them deeply, no matter how they feel about me, and to whom they meant the world. On another note which also sticks in my throat, is that it is always assumed that men are responsible for all domestic violence, almost every programme you see on it pictures the 'poor' female victim. It is well known in social services circles that far more men are victims of domestic violence by their female partners, but in the main out of embarrassment don't report it.
exalll
If this guy left the US via the UK, he is very lucky to have got away with it. Most western countries don't like middle-aged men travelling as the only adult with young children. I speak from experience. 10 years ago I travelled with my younger daughter from NYC, where we were living at the time, to Ottawa, where we were moving to, in order to visit her new school. My wife stayed behind in NYC with the older daughter. At Canadian immigration I faced a grilling about why I was travelling with a young girl. She was then interviewed by the immigration officer - I was told to stand 2m away and to make no sound or gesture. Eventually the immigration officer told me he was going to give me the benefit of the doubt, but if I ever thought of doing this again, I had better get a notarized letter from the mother.

hellodolly
The information given is thin at best. Anyways, I pity the poor bastard, as well as the child. If, as the report indicates, the child was healthy and happy upon being found, he was obviously doing something right, however misguided. She certainly wont be happy once he gets banged up. I know my daughter would be gutted if i were to suddenly be removed from her life. We will never know what motivated him, though if someone tried to take my child, i would be off like a shot. however if the direction is reversed the crime is significantly lessened The rest of the article says the mother is returning from Russia to be reunited with her daughter. ianf
whatever happended before , its never good to use a child for personal vendetta specially after a louzy divorce ... not to mention that this little girl needs her mother as well .... I dont know all the details of the story and have no idea about their life but to fleed your country with your kid is never the best solution. I think these people are farangs.......but in Thailand it is the norm for parents to abuse their children through a vendetta between the adults. Really annoys me because the child is not responsible for their parents' actions but they are the ones that usually suffer. I speak from experience with my ex Thai wife: she was treated like this as a child and off course treated pur child in the same way. He is now undergoing psychological counselling and is beginning to shape up, understand and so on.
