December 16, 200520 yr These guys are scared cos they can't handle the fact that we are here in the first place. My question is: Why? Basically it means that you are doing something they would not dare to do: They would not move to a country to work and live where they had the same situation as female Western expats do here. Yes, they are afraid. They respect and admire you for being a better man (having balls) than they. By "being a better man" I mean showing the characteristics they think only men have of being risk-takers, and being adventurous. Sadly, some male expats show few of the above characteristics, being stuck in a small world of routine and comfort zone. It's an easy lifestyle to fall into in a foreign country.
December 17, 200520 yr WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR A WOMAN TO "HAVE BALLS" & WHY IS IT SO SCARY? I am quoting from living in Phuket and what I observe/ experienced in general: - Driving on this island needs a strong heart (on a bike, or in a car, doesn't matter - try cycling! whooaaa ). Most of us are used to the civilised and polite ways of driving back home (at least for me). There are worse drivers than Phuketians, but for the sake of answering this thread... - Having not as much local friends (and attention) as farang males in a bar/ social gathering (e.g. I usually run out of topic to say when I speak with a bargirl, or she just wasn't interested to speak with me) - Hedious public toilet for girls in bars say, Andaman Queen in Patong (I go there with friends on holidays). Those toilets, , (just by being there you feel bateria-ed). Guys can wee discreetly and easily without close contact with the unknown, invisible junk hoovering about the cubicle. - Females are really the inferior sexes, but I don't feel it so strongly here. Local men treat me just as nice as farang men. But when I get to the Northeast, the male dominance is very obvious. It is almost a way of life, and us farang girls cannot accept that kind of unfair treatment if we try to put ourselves in the womens' shoes. - (OK doesn't apply to me, but) local males looves white females. They leer, leech, stare with x-ray eyes and drool at most white girls they see. We girls, are not used to this back home. The offending guy could get arrested for harassment if you look/ slightly touch a girl in the wrong way. Sometimes you feel weird when a local policeman is being too friendly with you. I never feel like this back home because I know if a police tries to be funny he'll never get away with it. Here.. OK, those above are examples. Now to answer 'why is this scary?': Because females are perceived to be the softer (in heart) sex. Coming out here to the jungle where all sorts of danger lurks really takes a lot out of a person, male or female. I think most men see Thailand as a pretty hardcore melting pot which not many 'ordinary' people appreciate. To find a farang girl experiencing the whole shebang with a stride probably conjur up feelings of admiration because the guys know how messy, bad, crazy Thailand can be when things go the other way. It takes a lot of mental strength to live here and be happy. Females, being more sensitive to their surroundings, taking this all in stride - it's no wonder men find it scary how we didn't start pulling our hair out. I'd say the guys were thinking if they were the girls here, they'd probably already gone mental. *hick..* I need a neurofen now..
December 17, 200520 yr I would take it as a compliment, the guys I work with say that telling a women she has balls is a sign of respect. It means she has acheived something they (men) would consider difficult so therefore she has balls, same as a man ( a bit chauvanistic but not something that would bother me)
December 18, 200520 yr I've got balls you gutless twerp. They are twins, but unidentical... I didn't read what this thread is about.
December 18, 200520 yr Sounds like they think you act more like blokes than women, or that you're taking a big risk that is inherantly something that men would do. I'm generalising but women generally act as the calming influence on mens crazier ideas, talking them into acting more realistic/normal.
December 18, 200520 yr Author Ben, I agree with you... They are a pain aren't they... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> They who Kayo?
December 18, 200520 yr Author nothing... nobody... I didn't say women! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You will make a great politician someday Klown

December 19, 200520 yr Sounds like they think you act more like blokes than women, or that you're taking a big risk that is inherantly something that men would do. I'm generalising but women generally act as the calming influence on mens crazier ideas, talking them into acting more realistic/normal. True, and guys tend to be intimidated by risk-taking women. My sister makes me look mellow and she scares the heck out of alot of men (as do I, I am sure ), despite the fact that she is attractive and intelligent. That said, she has had no difficulty when the man is confident and sure of himself as well. It seems to be the insecure ones that feel the need to bring others down to their levels. If a man told me I had balls I'd say "Thank you very much" It takes a tough person (man or woman) to survive and thrive in Thailand.
December 19, 200520 yr Just got back from a silly season party where I met many local mates and seasonal associates. As I keep to myself alot, I don't often invest in long and winding discussions. Tonight was an exception.I spoke to a lot of males this evening (both local and seasonal expats who visit each year for varying lengths of stay) on all manner of topics. A discussion arose about female expats and how we cope with living in a largely male dominated society (here in Thailand). I asked the guys how they they view us long-term female expats as opposed to their local partners here in LOS and their female compatriots in their homelands. They told me how much they admire us, they said: "You've got balls. And we don't understand how you do it and why you stay because this is a male domain" !!! But, they elaborated, "we find that both admirable and scary". They couldn't really explain any further (maybe the beer had something to do with that?) .... although they tried! The reason I posted this in Ladies, is because I want the opinions of ladies and guys that care to venture into this part of the forum. WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR A WOMAN TO "HAVE BALLS" & WHY IS IT SO SCARY? Any comments most welcome..... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> balls Vulgar Slang. The testicles. Courage, especially when reckless. Great presumptuousness. I guess what the guys were trying to say is that we are not afraid to give it a go!
December 19, 200520 yr doona,.... You have testicles. Doesn't have quite the same ring to it though does it?
