Hi guys,

Wonder if you can help me with a quick question. I have been reading the threads but my head is spinning with all the information.

I am a UK national. I've been working in Australia for two year and left last week. My plan is to travel a bit and then eventually end up back in the UK after a year or so. Taking the slow road. :)

I've turned up in Thailand on the 30 day visa on entry and I find I really like the place. I have a one way ticket to Penang next month. I did originally plan to hop from country to country but I fancy staying longer in Thailand.

Would it be possible for me to get a three month tourist visa for Thailand without going back to the UK? Can I get one in Penang?

I thought I might chill out in Penang for a couple of weeks, get a visa there then come back to Thailand for three months. Or is there a better country to go to if not Penang?

Cheers for any help you can give.

You should be able to obtain in Penang if you do not have other extended tourist visas to Thailand (your 30 day entry is not a tourist visa).

Thanks mate. Is there anything special I should worry about or should it be simple?

I am genuinely a tourist and not doing back to back visa I have no other extended thai visa in my passport.

Would it be the kind of thing I could do in a week then come back immediately?

Should be straight forward. If you go for a double entry tourist visa that will give you 6 months if you work it right. Each entry is 60 days and each one can be extended by 30 days so you get 180 days altogether if needed.

Visa's generally are apply one day collect the next.

True that Penang is not really a place to chill. 2 or 3 days there is more then enough. Besides it seems that Penang has lately become the least responsive of all boardering countries to be handing out visas let alone a double entry. Many just in the past 2 weeks have been refused.

Phnom Penh is a much better place to 'chill" and you could also travel around Cambodia to Siam Reap, Sihinukville etc.

Savanakhet in Lao is the best reports for visas these days and I have gone there before a few times. They have nice staff at the Thai consulate, no problems with double entry visas and it's a rather nice place to chill for a bit but again not TOO long as there isn't really a lot going on there.
