Drug-crime busters accused of possessing drugs

BANGKOK: -- Four drug-crime busters were arrested by fellow police after they allegedly made an arrest and seized drugs, but failed to report them to a supervisor, let the suspect go and kept the drugs, city police chief Pol Lt General Winai Thongsong said yesterday.

The suspects said they would testify only in court.

Metropolitan Police Region 3 policemen Pol Lieutenant Cherngchob Ratchakhom, 48, Pol Senior Sergeant-Major Somsak Thiprasameewong, 38, Pol Sergeant-Major Pattara Worachanan, 44, Pol Corporal Noppadol Pan-aree, 32, and civilian Chawalit Kamnerdkhonkaen, 38, were presented at yesterday's press conference along with 305,200 yaba tablets, five kilograms of crystal meth, three pickup trucks, and 10 cellphones.

The four police and their civilian accomplice face charges of having yaba and "ice" in their possession with intention to sell, Winai said.

Police claim their investigations found the four officers had seized the drugs in the Metropolitan Police Region 3's turf - date and location remains sealed pending investigation into |the drugs' origin and arrest of more suspects - but kept the drugs in their personal vehicles and didn't report |to their supervisor, Winai said.

The suspects maintained their innocence and said they would testify only in court, Winai said. The Metropolitan Police Bureau has already had the four officers dismissed from the civil service, Winai said. He warned other police if they were found to be involved in drug traffick-ing they would be severely punished under both the |disciplinary and criminal codes.

Narcotics Suppression commissioner Pol Lt-General Chaiwat Chotima said he wanted these arrests to be an example and let drug suppression police officers know that if they were involved with drugs directly or indirectly, their supervisors would punish them severely.

A source reported that when the drugs were smuggled from the North, the Narcotics Suppression police were keeping an eye on the drug-dealing group and preparing to make the arrest. However, Pol Lieutenant Cherngchob's special team for drug suppression, following previous drug retailer arrests, cut in front of them to make the arrest at a Min Buri condominium.

Hours passed but the arrested suspects and the seized drugs were not revealed to face legal procedure and the arrests were not reported to their supervisors. The Narcotics Suppression police contacted the Metropolitan Police to investigate, leading to the arrest of the five suspects. Police are now looking for another suspect who fled.

The source reported that Pol Lieutenant Cherngchob's special team has a record of satisfactory achievements in drug suppression. But on this occasion, they reportedly let the drug suspect go after the arrest, claiming in a report that the suspect asked to make a phone call to relatives at the condominium's ground floor and fled.

In Pathum Thani's Lam Lukka district, police yesterday raided a townhouse to find 20kg of ice and 1,020,000 yaba tablets, but declined to elaborate.

The police would deserve praise if they actually did something. All the cited events were criminals caught either by others finding out and forcing the police to respond, or the criminals own stupidity. Can't remember the last time a crime was actually solved through police work.

Monty, I disagree, the U.K. was rife with this in the 1970's but definately not anymore. Obviously there will be bent cops everywhere in the world but not on this scale in the U.K.

ST, will defer to your knowledge here but wherever there are drugs and the huge sums of money that follow there are generally cops or narcs around who have crossed the line. I read about a convinced cop who had become involved with drug dealing and he blatantly stated that he felt he could control and limit the crime involved by being part of it compared to just trying to halt it all.. Whenever there is huge financial incentive no matter what, we being what we are ,can justify anything.

These guys must have been US DEA-trained. The DEA is the most corrupt arm of the government in the States. The war on drugs back home is a war on the poor more than anything, with the exact same symptoms: low-level dealers busted, high-level dealers and arrested DEA agents walking away, sometimes without even being fired. When users become legal enforcers the REAL party starts.

These guys were on a triple secret undercover operation. It will all come out in court once the other parties involved have been compensated for having their super undercover operation blown.

I well remember the work of the DEA in-country around Chiang Rai. They had a mad scotsman feeding them info from the golf club. Nice work if you can get it. Often remember seeing him in uniform actually. Didn't matter what uniform, so long as it was a uniform. The one that got the biggest giggle was Army Engineers from Blighty.

Thai drug cops arrested for trafficking

Bangkok, March 22, 2012 (AFP) - Four Thai policemen have been arrested after they seized narcotics worth $1 million in raids on drug gangs and kept them to sell themselves, senior police said.

The four were arrested late Tuesday on the outskirts of Bangkok with 305,200 methamphetamine tablets and five kilograms (11 pounds) of "ice" worth 30 million baht ($1 million) in total.

"Four policemen and one civilian were charged with trafficking of illicit drugs," Bangkok Metropolitan Police commander Lieutenant General Winai Thongsong told a news conference Wednesday.

Winai said the four police, who denied the charges, had been sacked and handed over to anti-narcotics police for prosecution.

Thailand, along with other countries in the region, has seen a marked increase in seizures of methamphetamine as the world opiate trade declines.

Although drug trafficking can result in the death penalty in Thailand, executions are now rare.
