I'm not sure exactly which visa I have, I know it has to be a non-immigrant visa. I just don't know if its a non-b or non-ed or what? I am assuming its a Non-B..

I originally had a non-B but then I started teaching english and they gave me a new 1 year visa and work permit, notify every 90 days etc..

I read online somewhere that if you get married you can extend your Non-B.. same as if you got the Non-O.. except that you would not have to leave the country to get a new visa because you already have it, your just going to extend it based on marriage instead of work.. or something or other..

Is this true, or do I really need to cancel all my stuff and leave the country and get a new visa (Non-O) ?

I am asking because I will probably not continue working, and just need to stay until August, as this is when we will be having our wedding ceremony. But my current visa/work permit expires end of May.

Thanks

Are you going to quit working in May, if not extend on more year at immigrations based on employment.

You will not get an extension of stay or visa based on marriage before you are married.

Get married at the Amphur first and have the ceremony in August.

It's the legal marriage at the Amphur that counts.

For the extension of stay you must show 40.000 in income or 400.000 baht in the bank for two months.

You might have to get a tourist visa, then get married and get it changed to a Non Immigrant O based on marriage.

Or keep working up until you get married, then after getting married visit the local immigration office and change it to an extension based on marriage.

What kind of visa you now have is not important.

Currently you seem to be on an extension of stay based on your work. You can change that to one based on your marriage, if you are legally married at the amphur. A marriage ceremony is not a legal marriage.

The day you stop working is the day you must leave the country, or ask for an extension based on your marriage. For that you must either show an income of 40,000 a month OR 400,000 in a bank account in Thailand in your name for 2 months.

Basically you have a non immigrant B visa entry and it has been extended one year for work - there was no visa issued by immigration; only an extension of stay. That will end the day your employment ends.

So either you legally marry early or you obtain some other visa or visa exempt entry to tide you over until married and eligible for a non immigrant O visa from a Consulate (or conversion at immigration if you meet extension of stay financial requirements).

General interest question: How soon after being married at the amphur could you apply for a non-o based on marriage. Wouldn't a quick 'turnaround' (amphur to immigration) been seen as suspicious? Just wondering...

You can not apply for a visa at immigration except in the process of extension of stay - so no it would not be unreasonable to go from marriage to immigration to allow you to stay with the spouse.

just to clear up something..

I actually legally got married a few months ago.. I just ment that we are planning to have our ceremony in August but we are already legally married..

Also, I most likely will not continue working, I will be considering it until about 2 weeks into April, Which is when my agency said to call them back about getting a different Job for the next school semester..

I still have my contract with the agency, so I was going to just wait until middle of April and see if I cant get a part time job or something where it might be easy to quite around August which is when I planned to leave Thailand. or just not get any job..

If I get a job, then no worries about the visa.. If I dont get a job then I obviously need to do something about the visa.. and I am married at this time, So the option I was thinking is extension based on marriage. I have to get the Non-o? or I can do it with my current visa which is non-b?

I think this was answered already.. Ill re-read.. Thanks

Than it is no problem changing from an extension of stay based on work to based on marriage, if you meet the requirements. Prepare for when your job stops and have all the paperwork ready and the misses going with you.
