Mifi Dongle In Cm Anyone?

Featured Replies

Can only find USB modems in the shops. I could do it with a USB modem & a 3G wifi router but for compactness I'd like to try to find a MiFi device before I give up...

Anyone seen a MiFi unit in any of the shops?

CAT does a CDMA MiFi. It works as a hot spot and allows up to 5 people to use it at the same time. They use a Novatel MiFi2200.

I got mine about a year ago from a dealer in Pantip Plaza here in CM but I think the dealer has moved or closed. Check with CAT and they should be able to tell you where to get one.

I've used mine off and on for a little over a hear and have been happy with it. I use it primarily as a backup now (we all know how dependable service is here in CM) since I have service at the condo and also can use my iPhone as a hot spot.

Thanks David. I'm aware of that particular model and would be happy to find one. No net out here in the sticks so I'm currently using my sgs2 (True-H - same as CAT) as a somewhat expensive Mifi device 24/7...

I've been all over Kad Suan Kaew and had a quick look in Pantip but no luck, unless I just couldn't see the wood for the trees... Maybe try the CAT office, good idea...

I bought the AIS one at the airport plaza from Telewiz a couple of weeks back. It was currently 2990 THB, but the SIM card they give you is for a free 30 hour Edge+ only. You can upgrade to a 3G plan.

They might still advertise it for 3990 THB, so take note. I bought it at that price and then saw it at the cheaper price on the AIS website. Good thing they gave me back the difference.

Hmmm... The AIS one might work if it's (unlocked and) an off-the-shelf quadband device with a AIS logo on it... But if it's only dualband it won't work on True-H/MyCAT... I'll check it out though, cheers...

AIS just opposite to IT City in Airport Plaza sells their version of Mi-Fi. Note that it cannot be used with DTAC or True SIM cards.

Wonder if any of you CM guys can help? I’m no IT expert, so putting it simply, I’m moving to a remote mountainous area high above Chiang Mai. What’s the chance of getting internet on my laptop? How would I go about it? I’ve got a CAT CDMA dongle but don’t expect that’ll be much good up there.

You might be surprised. They haven't switched off CDMA yet and their towers do cover some quite sparsely populated areas...

Most of the 3G rollout has been in densely populated areas so you're unlikely to see 3G with the possible exception of True-H - which uses the same network as CAT so if you can "see" True-H, it's quite likely your CDMA will also work, at least until they decommission it.

Failing that you might be forced to look into installing an outdoor antenna & booster, to try to pick up on a distant tower and do 3G...

On a side note, I might take the cat cdma off your hands if it doesn't work - it would work where I'm at and would be cheaper than True-H - at least until they kill CDMA off...

I second what bobl says, the CAT CDMA dongle/wifi works in some really sparsely populated locations. The issue is that they will be decommissioning at some point in the near future, but they don't seem to know when...

I'll keep you in mind in that event, but the move to the new location is a few months away yet.

And thanks to DavidMavec too.
