skorchio
There must be some confusion. Thailand is the 'secret' world brothel. And this must remain a secret, we cant have every tom dick and harry knowing the truth.
Unkomoncents
Since when did this become news to Thais? Thailand has been the world's brothel for decades. Some 70 percent of the tourist industry is centered around sex tourism in Thailand. That means, unequivocally, that the vast majority of Thailand's tourists visit, not because of Thailand's allegedly (I say that because I prefer the cleaner beaches of Malaysia) beautiful beaches and "amazing" culture, but because they want to satisfy their deepest sexual urges. It's hilarious reading other posters' comments about how "there's prostitution in every country". It's the same old, worn-out attempt at trying to justify the absurdities of life in the place they've chosen to call home. Thais will keep sticking their head in the sand every time someone tries to point out one of the Kingdom's pathetic realities. It's an indication of deep, internal, cultural insecurities. I can' totally blame them though; if you were on the highway to hell, wouldn't you just want to enjoy the ride?

Yeppe
Thailand was the world's brothel. It´s so wrong to say so - I have lived over 3 years in Pattaya, 2 years in Bangkok and 4 years in Phuket and have never ever seen anything else except Temples and Monks - yeah right. It´s so strange that all my friends from other countries are always talking about Thai prostitutes - I always have to say that is legend - there is really only Temples and Monks and good food take it or leave it :-) . If there are prostitutes in Thailand (which I have never seen.....) why Thai gov doesn´t take it away? Too good business? Seems like only Nathee and me haven´t seen Thai prostitutes ever :-) . NanLaew
Well Pattaya is one of if not the largest red light district on earth. While other Asian countries have just as much if not more prostitution, they don't usually allow foreigners while Pattaya is aimed at them <deleted> has a Thai gay activists claim that a domestic Thai television program is offending Thai people by repeatedly claiming that Thailand is a whorehouse got to do with Pattaya and foreigners?

silsburyhill
No point trying to hide the fact ....millions of tourists already Know what Thailand is all about Well, quite. I've yet to hear a song make reference to any other country than Magnetic Field's '... on a ferris wheel on Coney Island underneath more stars than there are prostitutes in Thailand', or is it simply that it rhymes? Or, for a male visitor to be handed a box of condoms when asking his MD for vacs for his upcoming visit to, again, Thailand.Although some of you seem to be living in de Nile. JohnAllan
So, Lakkhana's statement was viewed as slanderous by Nathee and co? That is to say, it was untrue? Before proceeding to try - in typical Thaksin style - the patience of the law courts, Nathee might like to consider whether Lakkhana's statement]s] were, in fact, slanderous. He could start with a fact-checking visit to the family resort of Pattaya, followed by some sampling of the delights on offer in Patpong, Nana and Cowboy, before then going upmarket to Soi 33, the Royal City Avenue area etc. But let's be frank: when a town - or as it insists on being described, a city - allows its tourist industry to be so influenced by sex, including paedophilia, as to create a worldwide reputation of infamy - well, what sort of description do you expect to be ascribed to the city, and by association - bearing in mind the 'industry' stretches well beyond Pattaya - the country? atyclb
True, but it's the world's largest low quality brothel. If there is a country in the world where most women are totally unskilled and uninteresd in sex, this is Thailand. It's easy to have sex in Thailand, but difficult to have good sex. It's easy to get into a relationship in Thailand, but difficult to get into a good ,meaningful, adult relationship.Any guy having experience with ' latina' will agree with me... Absolutely agree.

DickFarang
Yeah , its hard to hear the truth .... compare with Thailand , some red districts in other countries looks like convents . I wonder if all massage parlors, gogo bars, escort service etc ...would close there would be a huge drop in tourism revenue. You can't expect the brothel owners (politician's & their families, military officers, police generals etc) to give up their tidy earner can you? Pattaya and the likes of Nana & Cowboy are mere window dressing on the greater business that is carried on throughout the kingdom, largely unknown and unnoticed by foreigners. The greatest percentage of the sex trade is Thai on Thai. Pattaya without the sex business would be merely a beach and a few high priced hotels. Thailand HUB of SEX. Pattaya, the hub for Russian Chang-drinkers.

eagleflyinghigh
I am really concerned by the mental (and may be sexual) health of Khun Nathee. It is the same "gay rights" activist who opposed the Chiang Mai gay pride (because it is against Lanna culture). This guy is a shame for our open and tolerant community. Prostitutes should be the real heroes in this country. How many got happily married to a foreigner and care for their whole family. Where is the problem with prostitution as long as no minors and force are involved ? Thais are pragmatic and this is a good thing. how241
Live and let live. Most of the bar/massage ladies I know are not forced into doing sex work. They like the fast easy money and allows them to make as much as doctor. Considering their educational backround and other factors there are not a lot of high paying jobs for them. Chopperboy
Come on he is a Gay right activist.... He is only upset that the gay prostitutes are not mentioned. Instead of attempting to challenging an obviously true statement he should publish the warnings of the possible death sentence from unprotected gay sex. I heard that with all that anal tearing and blood spilling during their "acts of love" increases the chances of contracting HIV/AIDS. He should concentrate on a more positive message, not throwing a fit. I new Natee about 15 years ago and in all fairness he was always known to have done a lot for HIV awareness at a time when almost no one was. FYI the spread of HIV is down to one protein (out of 900) in semen and vaginal fluid amyltransferase which allows HIV to pass the early ‘bottleneck’ in infection by assisting the virus to attach to genital surfaces, to establish a self-propagating infection at the point of entry, and to cross the mucosal barrier with migrating dendritic cells - its NOT the way you suggest. While I think everyone has a right to voice their opinions, even offensive and bizarre ones, what's sad is that because highly visible "gay activists" are so rare in Thailand, Nathee (whether accidentally or intentionally I don't know) has been projected as the top voice of gay activism in Thailand. That is a real shame. I can't really blame Nathee for that even if intentional. Other Thai gay activist voices are free to project themselves. Where are they? newermonkey
"Thailand is the world's brothel" Or "Thailand the brothel HUB of the world" sounds better. Is he complaining that this is not a fact or is he complaining it should kept a secret? Because if either he is wrong on both counts. Its a recognized fact around the world that Thailand has the biggest sex industry in the world and is the # One HUB for sex and is the envy of the world over. Well there aren't any official statistics on that, but it seems clear that it is true. 40% of tourists now are female (higher percent than China or India). Just look around, go to Patpong or lower Suhkumvit and you see a bunch of half empty bars, and then go to Khao San Road or any of the various mega malls and there are huge teeming crowds of people. Demographic of tourists have changed, the single western male headed to gogo bars are a small minority. More families and children come than ever before, huge numbers of young people and couples, Russians are now the largest 'farang' group, and Asians now make up 2/3rds of tourists.
