Often if you ask the pharmacist if they have any 'generic' aspirin you might get lucky, as opposed to having to buy some Bayer 500 mg blister packs. The generic dose is usually is 325 mg and I have found enteric coated aspirin. It's very cheap, about 50 satang or one baht a pill, but you won't get a bottle, you'll get a little plastic bag. I understand from a reliable source that pharmacist's are told to 'push' the Bayer on foreigners and not the generic. I have had most success in 'Thai' pharmacies rather than Boots and the other chain pharmacies.

Gobsmacked I went to the large Pharmacy opposite Suan Dork Hospital where they served me 200 Baby asprin 81mg.

That's correct, Pharmacies cannot sell asprin any more. They can only be dispensed at hospitals as a prescribed medicine by a doctor.

I understand that long term use of aspirin can potentially cause stomach problems. Is that why it is difficult to find aspirin in Thailand, or is there another reason(s).

Also, "Tolstoy", based upon your comment, what is the negative connection between taking aspiriin & mosquitos?

If you want aspirin for your heart or the new theory that taking an aspirin a day reduces the risk of cancer then you want a low dose around 75mg. Pharmachoice between Meechok and the inner ring road sells bottles of 81mg and I actually bought 20 bottles for a friend of mine there.

Name me a pharmacy in Airport Plaza or KSK that doesn't sell strips of 10 Bayer Aspirin 500 mg....usual price 15 Baht.

Me too - interested to know the connection with mosquitos.

Not confusing that with pseudoephydrine in cold meds?

I don't beleive asprin has any ulterior uses.

This is quite a recent rule, not sure if it only applies to 'bottles' of asprin. I take an asprin every day (prescribed by my doctor) and I usually buy at the local pharmacy. But a couple of weeks ago I called in and they told me that the cannot sell the usual 50 bottle of baby asprin. I had to go to my doctors surgery.

OK, I see your point, maybe it's just in bottles, but they do sell them in boots. biggrin.png

Bayer Aspirin 500 mg strips of 10 tabs are freely available for 15 Baht (1.5 Baht per tab) and you can get as many strips as you want. Depending on what strength you take you can chop them down easily enough. It's all a bit silly really, when a person can buy a drug such as Tramadol 10 for 30 Baht plus, in any pharmacy.

My doctor has also recommended to take one a day, specifically Aspent 81 due to hypertension. These are in plastic bottles but will need to check availability soon as I'm out. Really silly to restrict aspirin. Why not paracetamol and similar which also have side effects if improperly used? huh.png

Dengue fever is prevalent here. If you are taking aspirin and have dengue fever, you will die (not overstatement). Paracetemol and other non aspirin pain relievers don't have the same effect thinning ones blood.

Aspirin is acetyl salicitic acid and to my knowledge it has nothing connected to making illicit drugs. Since Aspirin is a very basic thing to make, (I made it in high school chemistry) it would surprise me that anyone doing something illicit could just make it themselves. It is not like the Psuedephredine used to make meth.

Just wondering what he wants it for. I believe it is recommended to take a child strength aspirin every day to help avoid blood clots. At that strength it would not really help a adult avoid pain with just one a day.

uptheos you seem to be up on most medical things is what I posted correct?

Dr.Tavachi, Loi Khro Clinic and the Dr who writes up in CM mail/Pattaya Post both say a Daily aspirin should be taken by Men over 50, Providing there are No Side Effects.

I have taken aspirin for last 6 years.

Anyone should consult their Dr before following this advice.

Is Aleve (niproxen sodium), 220 mg tablet, available in any of the pharmacies in Chiang Mai?

Not sure about that brand, but generic Naproxen is available in pharmacies.

Just to add. If you are in KSK second floor. Go into the pharmacy next to Boots. Second little aisle on the right you will see Diclofenac 50 mg in oblong red boxes (10 for 35 Baht). I feel sure I've seen Naproxen on that shelf too at about the same price. If not they will have some somewhere in the shop. I got relief with this med, but my stomach didn't like it and I stopped. I know the possible side effects of Naproxen, so I proceeded cautiously. However, my dear old dad was on them for about 10 years before he died (89) and never had one stomach complaint.

If the brand was Asepnt it is due to stock outs as the plant thatmakes it was badly damaged in the floods.Itis not due to aspirin beingi n any way a restrcted drug, just temporarily off the shelves. (Other brands are still on the shelpbutAspen is the only enteris coated brand AFAIK)

For blood thinning aspirin dosen't hold a candle to Wharfin. It is prescribed for my heart by a heart specialist. Sense I have been on it I have met a number of older people who are taking it.

Warfarin is far more powerful, is basically rat poison, should only be taken on Rx with monitored blood levels checked every 3/12. Aspirin of course is less dangerous.

It's Warfarin (or Coumadin in the U.S.) and not Wharfin, and like uptheos stated, it is rat poison.

Just as an aside--and I am sure that Mr. Uptheos is far more knowledgeable than I am on this subject--but when you mentioned Diclofenac I remembered that, while in UK recently, this drug was being linked to a higher risk, 4-fold in fact, of heart attack when used as a pain killer by patients with a heart problem history--completely off topic but just wanted to mention to Uptheos--who, as I said, will undoubtedly already be aware of this.

Sure, dengue is here but how many people actually get it?

Dengue does not usually result in bleeding.

Where did you get the idea that taking aspirin and having dengue will result in death?

Suspect he is thinking about this form of dengue where aspirin could exacerbate the situation. However I would say his comment was an 'overstatement'.

In a small proportion of cases the disease develops into the life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleeding,

Indeed I am aware of this and many other drug warnings. I wasn't advocating taking Diclofenac, merely trying to be accurate regarding where to find Naproxen if you happen to be in KSK. When I said "I got relief with this medication" I was referring to Naproxen as mentioned by OP. The item I buy on that shelf is the Diclofenac gel that you rub into the inflamed area.

However, as in all cases it is up to each individual to decide for themselves, weigh up the pros and cons and find out as much information as they can, especially here where self medicating is quite popular. I'm not overly confident that most doctors are up to date with adverse effects or really care about them anyway.

Pharmacist's will sell you whatever they have without a word of warning or why you need to take it.
