I had an interesting experience with Amazon. I ordered a paperback book and a Michelin map. The total price was around $20. The shipping and handling came to $15 for ordinary mail. I cancelled the order and sent them an email complaining about the ratio of shipping to purchase price. I argued that if iHerb can send me a box of supplements for $6 flat, weighing more than a book and a map, Amazon should be able to do the same.

I received a bullsh_t reply telling me how they calculate the price for shipping. The email came with an invitation to rate the reply.

"Thank you for your inquiry. Did I solve your problem?

I clicked no and told them it's not the calculation but the policy of charging for each item, (whereas they pay postage based on weight).

I got a reply within a few hours assuring me that my suggestion would be passed on to the relevant powers and offering me a 50% discount on the shipping charges for that order.

I completed the transaction, followed the instructions. Within an hour I got this email:

"As my previous colleague promised, I've requested a refund of 50% shipping costs of $7.50 to your credit card. You'll see the refund on your Visa statement in the next 2-3 business days.

Once processed, you'll be able to see the refund request here:

I hope this solution works for you. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

I clicked 'yes'!!

If you're in Thailand and buying physical books, please complain to Amazon about their shipping charges. You might get a discount and Amazon might reconsider their policy.

Which company is it being sent by? DHL, Fedex?

Please report back with your experience form Thai customs, if you see any lube for sale before then, I suggest you buy it !

When ever you can, try and get someone to buy it for you and send it regular post.
