Thailand urges coastal evacuation after major quake

Bangkok, April 11, 2012 (AFP) - Thailand issued an evacuation order Wednesday for its Andaman coast, a popular tourist destination, after a massive earthquake off Indonesia triggered a tsunami alert.

Thailand's National Disaster Warning Centre advised people in the area to move to higher places and stay as far away as possible from the sea.

for those that read Thai:

http://twitter.com/#!/rawangpai

- this one says, tsunami waves as high as 3-4 metres expected to hit Phanga at 5pm, Krabi 5.58, Phuket 6.18pm

I cant verify authenticity of info....thats the thing about twitter.....its just something to keep watch of various bits and pieces, some of it might be eye witnesses, but others might be hearsay. please take the info with this in mind.

hope its all just a false alarm

Helicopter just went overhead in north Patong. Going towards the beach. A lot of people walking up the hill behind me, some trying to protect their cars.

Just got a call with a recorded message (in Thai). Wonder if this is a warning message?

bbc news

But Bruce Presgrave of the USGS later told the BBC that the nature of this quake made it less likely a tsunami would be generated, as the earth had moved horizontally, rather than vertically, therefore had not displaced large volumes of water.

"We can't rule out the possibility, but horizontal motion is less likely to produce a destructive tsunami," he said.
