Cabinet delays Bt15,000 pay raise for graduates

BANGKOK: -- The proposed blanket pay raise to a standard Bt15,000 salary for civil servants with a bachelor's degree cannot be paid immediately, a government spokesperson said yesterday.

Such a pay hike in one stage would require Bt50 billion annually and affect the salary scales of private businesses, he said.

Anusorn Iamsa-ardn said reports about the Cabinet decision on Tuesday postponing the raise to a standard Bt15,000 salary for the next two years were not wholly true. Many government officials had already received pay on top of their salaries which had lifted their monthly income to Bt15,000 since January.

The promised blanket Bt15,000 pay hike, which would be in effect by 2014, would be a whole salary increase at entry level, without other pay included, he said.

Government officials with degrees lower than bachelor’s level had been paid Bt9,000 since January, as promised under the Pheu Thai-led government’s populist policies.

"The blanket raise to Bt15,000 has to be done in two steps. An immediate and widespread pay increase for government officials and employees in private businesses would affect the entire domestic employment scene and would lead to private firms losing their [attraction for] new graduates [with bachelor’s degrees]," he added.

Well the govt spokesman is now saying the 15k can't be paid immediately and has to be staged over the coming years which does imply the expection was for it all to be implemented soon after taking up office.

Ill thought out at best.

It's never mentioned, and I don't know why, but the rice farmers were promised a 50Kg bag would increase from resale price of 500Bt to 600Bt prior to Mr T raking in his cronies' votes. I have been told this by many a family in Ubon, and they are actually quite dismayed with Mr T at this moment. They aren't sure if they are actually red-shirts anymore, but they don't know where else to turn as the other lots don't encroach the red leaders in those districts for fear of safety.

Anybody else here experienced the same said promise of rice prices? (As it could be rural gossip, of course)

Perhaps the Thaksin Thinks, Pheu Thai Acts party could follow their programs for taxi drivers and farmers and simply issue credit cards to the university grads with a 15K/month limit.

Certainly the poor downtrodden red masses who cast their hopeful votes didn't rise a stink over another self serving act by and for the elites.

Not to mention the new house tax break and the new car tax break... It's funny how a government that is supposed to be helping the rural poor is able to help the middle class, but not the people who elected them!

I suspect that it's as Mel speculated above... no matter what the reality, the Northern and North Eastern Rural poor are going to vote Red anyways, so why bother enacting policies that help them?

We knew that when they said it in June. It can't be done with both inflation (the ones that got the raise), and deflation, (the ones that didn't). Because if you got the raise you got a job and probably cost 3 people their jobs. These 3 are in the unemployment line.

Has anyone tried to interview a new graduate, or worse, employed one? If the plan is to increase their first salary by 6 or 7,000 baht, what plan to improve the quality is in place? What about the people with no degrees but 3, 5 or 10 years experience who actually know their job? Are they going to be put on 20,000 plus minimum?
