Unfortunately what you would like will never happen, most posters are decent people and provide straight forward honest answers, again unfortunately a minority of posters are not decent people and would rather post sarcasm or be rude putting down a certain individual or a certain group of ex pats, it's up to the decent people on here to just ignore the not so decent people, forums will never change they will always attract the unsavory types!!

I agree totally, it seems to be forum wide and not only restricted to the phuket section. I have lived in thailand for many years and been a member here for several but spend very little time reading and very seldom post because there are so many negative people on the board.

There is a wealth of knowledge on here but it is very tedious looking through all the dribble and negative comments trying to find it.

Greetings fellow Phuket Forum Members,

I don't know if I am allowed to do this, but here I go anyway.

State of the Forum in this posters view is bleak. I think we should make some basic rules, because in the few years I've been on here it has spiraled in what one poster said was "a bunch of old women". After having seen the answers to a couple easy topics today, I'm almost ready to agree.............Stupid arguments over much ado about nuthin.

A guy can't ask about specific Songkran Days, nor about a watersport without the group here jumping on a suitcase like a Samsonite Monkey.

So what do you say we clean it up.

1. if you have something helpful, insightful or a direct answer, post. Otherwise don't.

2. telling someone to go use Google, is bad netiquette, out right rude

3. if you want to contribute (#1), maybe you could take a shot at #2, then post saying what you found

4.if you are just out for an argument, go kick the dog instead (although I hope it bites you or pees in the house in response)

5.try and be positive at least 95% of the time

Now get out from behind your box and go throw some water. GOM

I like the thread but I think you're missing my point.

In my home country, I was a avid bird watcher. Yes its down right boring for most people.

Once I moved to Phuket, I wanted to seek out other bird watchers and information on what birds to look out for and species.

I had a choice, Do I make a thread in the Phuket forum on Thaivisa or do I research the internet via Google for my specific and not common hobby in a area I'm new to?

If I had chose the first option, I would have zero replies and it would die off within 48 hours when a simple Google search gave me what I was looking for in seconds. Google bird watching phuket yourselves and you'll see what I mean.

The reason for the staleness of the forum is just this. You have the power of the internet in front of you yet you feel a local forum might know best and if even 50% of people bothered to use the search function we would have less of the crap but that's a whole new topic for me to debate. How many 'real estate agent' threads to we need?. Jesus..

I will take your advice and refrain from telling people to use Google because I feel stupid for needing to tell people. Research the internet, phuket forum doesn't know everything that is phuket.

I agree with you GOM, although I don't see any problem with someone injecting the occasional bit of humour in a thread, provided it is not OTT. I'm also not sure about the Google bit. In the past, it would seem some posters have simply not thought about the Google option and it can be helpful to (politely) remind them, perhaps with a suggested form of words for the search expression. As to those whose immaturity gets in the way of their commonsense, there is always that 'other place' that they can go and 'play' with like-minded individuals. We can't talk about moderation in the open forum, but I can say that 95% of the time, I'm happy with the way things are done here and those who are not perhaps should not be here...

Google, Wikipedia etc are wonderful things, not everyone likes to use them, if a poster asks a question is it right to be rude or sarcastic? is it not better to provide a sensible straight forward answer, I am going back to a prime example of downright rudeness, a thread a while ago asked where to get the cheapest beer, the response from certain people was disgusting and rude, even going to the length of putting down retirees who live on Phuket, to me this is the unsavory types that are ruining these forums!!!

To me it is people who would rather be rude, sarcastic over being considerate and going out of there way to help others.

That's the main problem. That and confusing the internet with real life.

Are you saying the internet is not real life, dam I thought it was lol

2. telling someone to go use Google, is bad netiquette, out right rude

The proper solution is for a search engine knowledgeable member to put a link to Google with the search terms in it already. Not everyone is proficient in correctly identifying the best search terms to find what they want.

//edit - I see you got that suggestion in #3

If you define someone as unsavory for being rude or sacastic, you better not attend any Comedy nights Kenny.

I think unsavory wasn't the word you were looking for but whatever. You get a pass.

Do we all go through thick and thin in our dailly lives with a smile for dealing with everything ?

Nooooo, life's not like that, so l see know difference with loosing ones rag now and again using the forum.

Most real bad asses on TV have been banned, seen them come and seen them go, but for the most, me included, getting upset here now and again isn't that bad, is it ?

And that is what I did.

Thank you.

Why would I not attend a comedy night? being rude or sarcastic to someones face would be commendable maybe foolish or is it brave, but I am able to deal with anything said to my face!!

Getting upset is quite normal....

Is it?

I must be abnormal then.

An explanation is needed in your case, getting upset now and again would be considered showing character. hope that helps.

Again, you need some thicker skin if you are to participate online.

Just the fact you say youre able to deal with anything said to your face shows your maturity levels can't cope with forum banter.

I haven't seen one post today that has offended you so why you so worked up?

What's to explain?

I don't get upset at words on my computer that are from complete strangers.

Getting upset shows character? Who told you that?

Who are these rude and sarcastic people Kenny and yourself are referring to?

I've hardly been sarcastic and if linking a lmgfy link is rude, guilty as charged.
