Buy Books From Amazon, Ship To Thailand?

I've done it many times and it's never been a hassle. In all the 11 years I've done it, I've never had to pay any custom fees and I always order more than one book at a time so as to keep the shipping costs down as much as possible. Postage will be quite expensive though. The last time I bought two books together the total shipping costs were $14.97.

I might be wrong, so someone might correct me on this, but I think bringing in books is except from custom fees.

I have ordered books from Amazon US/UK sites a few times and even for expensive text books for work, I haven't had to pay any customs. Maybe they can't believe I would pay $150 for 1 book! :P

Shipping fee is USD $9.98 per book regardless of size and regardless of whether they are packed together. Never had a problem with duties at this end. Very good service.

Seems like it would be just fine then, thanks for the answers

You probably want the hard version and I am probably stating the obvious but have you considered e readers at all.

Maintaining a library account back at home and downloading e books.

yes, I want to look into that as well later, however right now, I want, as you said, the real books.

Aren't e-books more expensive?

Almost always cheaper. Usually much cheaper. And the prices of e-books are about to drop because of a court case in the US that will permit amazon to lower them. There are a few occasions when I have noticed that an e-book is a little more than the paperback, but that's before shipping costs. And you get the book in a minute.

I have a "kindle" from Amazon.com and you can buy/download books via your computer if you are not in a wifi area.

I ordered it while here in Thailand and only took about 3 weeks to arrive.

You will find many many books very cheap, and they even have a section where you can sell the books back after you are finished with them.

I will never need to buy another paperback again. Get a Kindle.

Nice, in theory.

Most libraries don't have that wide of a general catalogue - less available through an e-edition.

The variety and selection compared to online bookshops doesn't even compare.

Writers have to write. Write 500 words a day. When you get to 80,000, stop and edit. You may have a book.

ebooks are easy to publish. Making money at it is the hard part.

Took a year to write the first. Year and half for the second. It's a process.

I belong to a couple of excellent libraries so they are free.

Some e books are very over priced, but I usually pay in the region of $8 thereabouts for mine , shopping around etc.

I do believe there is a court case going on now in the US regarding price fixing on e books , hopefully the prices will come down eventually.

It really depends which library you belong to also I would imagine.

The Book Depostory in england is a much cheaper option and I have found it reliable and quicker.

An example of the difference between the two is:

The Seventh Scroll by Wilbur Smith: The Book Depository $12.30 USD (all the books from here come with free delivery)

Amazon $9.99 plus shipping $9.98 for a total of $19.97 USD

The longest I have had to wait from The Book Depository is 16 days.

Did you get your Kindle in Thailand? If so, where. If not, how did you order? Much appreciate any info as I would like to have an e-reader.

If you mean was I in Thailand when I got my Kindle...yes.

I simply went online to Amazon.com, registered and filled out the appropriate forms and within 3 weeks it arrived in the mail. I highly recommend you also purchase the cover that also has a built-in light for night reading. If you are in the city it might be quicker as I am out in the sticks and snail mail is really snail mail.
