Dept makes it much easier to pay road tax

BANGKOK: -- To provide greater convenience to motorists, the Land Transport Department is installing drive-through facilities where they can pay their annual road tax at the department's headquarters in Chatuchak. Department chief Piyapan Champasut said owners of smaller vehicles, including motorcycles, would now only have to wait about three minutes to register and pay their road tax thanks to the drive-through facilities.

Two counters will deal with motorcycles and other small vehicles, while another five would be for seven-seater passenger cars, vans (carrying over seven passengers), and pickup trucks. Each lane would be able to accommodate up to 10 vehicles.

Mr Piyapan said the department's drive-through facilities are expected to serve about 1,000 people a day. The regular counters serve up to 6,000 people a day.

The drive-through facilities will ``go live'' on Jan 4, 2006, and will be open during 7.30am-3.30pm.

Motorists still need to bring along all the relevant documentation, including vehicle inspection certificates.

``Motorists can drive to the drive-through facilities area and pay their annual road tax without having to leave their vehicles,'' the department chief said.

Mr Piyapan said the project, which would cost about 12 million baht, would be further extended so each lane could accommodate up to 20 vehicles.

The scheme, known as ``Drive Through For Tax'', is also likely to be implemented in major provinces, including Chiang Mai and Nakhon Ratchasima, in April 2006, he said.

I can't say it is difficult now.

Takes about 10 minutes at the Ao Udom office in Chonburi.

The same goes for Driving licence renewal.

Both used to take an hour or so.
