CHIANG MAI: -- A Pheu Thai candidate on Monday obtained No 1 for his by-election campaign in Chiang Mai's Constituency 3 after Pheu Thai MP Chinnicha Wongsawat was disqualified for a false declaration of her assets.

Kasem Nimmonrat was given the number as he was the only one to apply to run in the election on the first day of application period, which ends this Friday. About 300 of Kasem's supporters showed up at the venue.

The by-election is required following the disqualification of Chinnicha, the daughter of former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, by the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions for a false declaration of her assets. She was also banned from politics for five years.

Chiang Mai's election commission chairman Boonrat Wongyai said the application period on the first day was quiet possibly because of the rain.

Candidates from other parties have time until Friday to submit their applications. The chairman was confident that the campaign and the election set for June 2 in Chiang Mai would be peaceful, as in the past.

In the previous election, voters' turnout in the province was 86 per cent so he expects the turnout to be not less than 70 per cent.

He also warned voters that the June 2 election falls on Saturday and not Sunday as is usually the case.

This could get very interesting. The other parties were obviously waiting to see what happened with PTP. I wonder how miffed the reds are now that they have been snubbed in that they wanted a major say in who the candidate was, This could be a dangerous miscalculation by PTP. The reds could make a statement here and ensure that PTP do not get the seat. They could of course field their own candidate! The reds could now use this as significant leverage to get jatuporn that seat!

I always thought the number was randomly drawn after the application period ended. Have I always been wrong in this ?

I don't think it will happen. Chiang Mai is too important. Thaksin will use some money to ensure victory.

Maybe red democracy?

PTP draws randomly the 1 (for a small fee) while the others draw randomly the other numbers.....

But it doesn't matter Chiang Mai is important. He'll win the election no matter how much it will cost.

I'm sure that if any vote buying is going on by the PTP the democrat party will bring it to the relevant authorities attention just like all those other vote buying incidents which apparently happen as soon as a PTP candidate is announced. How many times has it happened so far H90, I presume you have proof of your accusations. Perhaps some of your peers could tell us how many times it has happened.

True but it won't be cheap. I heard that at the last red shirt rally they only drew 25 people.

Well I think the PTP needed some lessons from farang on Thai culture, as it appears their own knowledge is lacking. One thing I have learned is never ever piss off a Thai, because they will never forgive you and they will never forget, regardless of any money that may now be involved. PTP have pissed off a lot of red shirts and I think they are about to be shown just how much.

Which may suggest that just like in Pathum Thani lots of eligible voters will stay home rather than vote for a non-red-shirt (or an unacceptable Pheu Thai) candidate

Time will tell

That would be the most likely response, just don't vote.
