I'm most afraid of the U-turns at Sukumwit,

as it has turn out, nearly every thai is bent on crossing all 3 lanes immediately to make it across to the most left lane, regardless if those lanes are occupied or not.

The speed there is also high so it is a certain death sentence

About 1/3 of the time I drive through Klang intersection along Sukhumvit from the south, there's a car stopped on the right lane with the front bumber missing. It's just way too crowded. The intersection of Nern Plubwan and Thanon Rod Fai on the dark side is very scary too, but amazingly haven't seen that much carnage there. The speeds are lower, I guess.

That's prob. the worst.

Sorry fellas I agree it is congested and there are accidents there, but at an average of about 5Kph. Look at just about any Suk intersection/U-turn and there are weekly fatalities as opposed to your nominated junction.

Agree, but all four intersections at Thanon Rodfai and SSCC up to Soi Kaotalo, can be a nightmare at peak times.

Crashes and accidents every day.

Also intersection Thanon Rodfai and Chaiaporn Vithi (3240) is very dangerous, because of the high speeds at this area of Thanon Rodfai.

Sukhumvit from Underwater world to just after the Floating Market, absolute Chaos!!

People trying to U turn near the Underwater World to cross Sukhumvit and go up Toonglom Tanmaan has proved to be fatal for quite a few recently.

And to see the speed people come down there past No.7 School when the lights at Wat Boon are green is just sickening!!.

Too much speeders ignoring the red at the Chaiyapruek junction as well, many people have met their maker at this crossroads!!

And well what can you say about the buses/taxis that come out of the Floating Market and head across 3 Lanes of Suk to U turn!!!!!!!!!!shock1.gif Yeah, for me this is definitely the freakiest stretch of Sukhumvit!!

Yeah thats a bad one but most accidents are usually low speed, there are however many.

Not sure if its still there but at the other end of Soi Diana outside Kiss there was a huge shiny metal plate on the road, when it rained it was like a skating rink. Deadly on a motorbike, had many a close shave.

None freak me out, I just put on the hazards and power straight through them all.

You do realise that when you put on your hazards as you "power through" vehicles approaching on your left side only see your left side indicator and may well pull out in front of you expecting you to turn left!! Standard operating procedure for Thais at all junctions but to my mind extremely dangerous.

And according to the video at the land office,(if you ever have the misfortune of having to sit through it) against the law to use your hazard lights when driving, only to be used when the vehicle is not moving !!

A quick flash of the headlights alerts them to the fact Iam powering through.

Problem is that many locals are not really locals but have come from smaller towns or villages and are just not conditioned to what has become a major city and the way to drive in such a city. I find that when I am the first in the queue at any lights when they turn green, it pays to wait a few second and look both ways before starting off. That has save my life and some locals' lives on many occasions.

The junction at the road to Khao Chee Chan and Sukhumvit is the most dangerous.

Vehicles (especially buses and trucks) don't stop at the red light on Sukhumvit so if you're turning right from Kao Chee Chan they'll just wipe you out.

Other than that I'd say EVERY junction with a soi and thannon in Thailand is dangerous because of the motocy (and some cars) that don't stop at the end of the soi to check for traffic but just drive strainght onto the major road in front of faster oncoming vehicles.

Ah, so it's you who's stopping the traffic from moving and causing the jams. I've always wondered who it was sleeping at the lights when they turn green, allowing only a few cars to pass in the small interval the lights stay green. Check your rear view mirror next time, you'll see cars frantically trying to change lanes (and often crashing too) because the line isn't moving. I do my looking while I'm still standind in the front and time flooring the pedal according to it, it's just a timing issue.

Thais are experts in creating dangerous intersections.Look at the numerous intersections on Sukhumvit where 3 lanes have to stop for the red light but the far left lane is allowed through.

To make it even more exiting they will change the situation every forth night.

I don't agree. Yes, it's total chaos, but somehow it works. People give way, and I have not seen injuries or damaged cars there.

The dangerous one is South and Suk. Yet another death/injury when someone thought they could beat the lights the other day. Followed by Suk and Klang, where they creep into to road waiting for the green light.

Edit: Typo

If we discount the 'All of them vote' it looks like Suk/Theppasit is pulling ahead.

I believe that one is particularly dangerous as it has more potential for high speed accidents , I have often seen buses barrel through there at high speed well after the lights have gone against them.

I think the place with the most accidents would have to be Dolphin roundabout? when it is open, appears to be so many accidents, easier to just close down. If roundabouts worked here they could help solve quite a few problem area's - But they don't, Thai's overall are too selfish to consider other drivers...

When I was last through there they had signs up telling drivers how to use the roundabout which might help, especially if there's a cop on hand to collect the instant fine.

Never seen an accident at dolphin nor had problems driving through. I've even sat at the Mr.Coctail there a few evenings in the hope of catching some carnage, but no luck.

It's a circus, granted, but in my opinion Thais drive better without any traffic lights or police guidance, having some sort of sixth sense on who gets to go next. I picked up on the sync of driving in the middle of yaba-heads, bus drivers annoyed out of their minds with Russian tourists aboard, songtaews with fifty people on them and the driver on his hundreth carabao of the day and the assorted scooter drivers with a death wish. Somehow there's always an opening the size of the mitsu space wagon I navigate around here. Missus has had five accidents with the troop carrier, I've never had an accident in my life, though I've clocked around a million kilos in a dozen countries (not counting totalling three race cars on the track, a different world). Have to knock wood there.

Pattaya is a bit tame anyway. For real thrills, try driving the #2 road through Khon Kaen at dawn without lights on. The habit there is to stick the nose of the pickup half way over the opposing traffic, I guess in an attempt to check for traffic before crashing with a truck going 120 without lights. That said, every weekend when the folks from BKK arrive in herds, one can easily see who's a local and who's from the big mango. Locals, including me, have no mercy whatsoever cool.png

That is a bad one, and probably tops for "confused sea state". But traffic is usally moving pretty slow there. As a pedestrian, it rates pretty high as dangerous though. can't tell from what direction I might be hit!

My vote is for Sukumvit going North at the Tesco Lotus complex and Therapasit.

The shoppers at Tesco have to cross over the four lanes to get to either the first light for a U-Turn or to the second light to go to the darkside. Add to the mix the drivers that can't understand that the light at Therapasit has a green arrow to go straight and a red light to stop you from making a right, so they hesitate at the light because they only see the red. And of course, all the buses that insist that they have a god given right to be in the far left lane so they can be the first to run into the Therapasit traffic turning left on to Sukumvit with their god given right to make a left turn on red no matter what, you have a perfect storm for traffic chaos

Better known as chaos corner, I've seen 3 accidents happen there and I don't live in Pattaya.

That's more than I saw happen in all the time I lived in the UK.
