How Are You Hedging Against The Euro/Greek Crisis?

Recommended Posts

I personally suspect that todays Greek vote will go in favour of the anti austerity party and that stocks across the board will gap well down on opening.....

Of course if the Pro austerity party gains the vote then just as likely we will see stocks gap upwards......

My idea of hedging is to be out of the market completely and wait to see which way the wind blows !!

You are hedged against a drop but not a bounce.

Exactly right-I'll take my chances over the next 24 hours and stay out.....

I suspect there will be a big opportunity just prior to main market opens at 0700 BST monday morning...... Only my opinion.

Who knows how I can get access to BRL money markets, which broker does non-deliverable swaps on BRL?

not sure but if Oanda doesn't do BRL denominated NDFs no other broker will and you have to resort using a "real" full fledged bank.

p.s. i just checked Oanda. no sign of BRL anywhere.

Yes, I need an institution offering BRL NDFs - I haven't heard of any bank offering it.

Opinion on the Euro;

Sounds to me like he knows what he is talking about.

He is an opinionated idiot with no solutions. Just pissing on the field from the sidelines.

He did not agree with the Euro in the 1st place ...and he does have solutions .. He thinks the Greeks should withdraw ..devalue

What solutions have barosso and Co come up with .. they are the ones with heads buried in the sand .. kicking the can ..

and as for pissing on the pitch from the side lines I can think of a couple of TV members ..smile.png

He has no skin in the game and never will, so talk is cheap. He is also anti-EU, so nobody is interested in what he says apart from a few nutters.

As for your inference about certain TV contributors I am shocked, deeply shocked..............................

More and more of the populations of europe are not taking the waffle of Barroso , gollum & co for granted .. look at recent elections in France ..Farage is being proven by events that he should have been listened to a lot earlier ..

The populations are not voting against waffle. Don't be silly. They are voting for social democratic charlatans (France and Greece) who have been promising them a continued free lunch. The only usefulness of Farage is that his party sucks up support that might otherwise go to neo-Nazi organisations, but I am afraid you will have to wait two years before you can waste your time on the stump for him. Meanwhile back at the ranch........................

It's not a hedge so much but an investment\gamble ...... I bought puts and calls on the TNA friday, I expect the markets to move one way or the other enough to make a pretty good return. The TNA is the russel 2000 triple index and it moves pretty well on market swings.

Mr Straddle! How was the pricing?

I bought some around TNA price of 47.5 ...... about 2 dollars 48 calls 47 puts I bought 46 puts for about 1.20 and 50 calls for 1.20 when it went to 48 ..... and then it ended the day around 49 so I bought 49 puts and calls for around 2.20 each ....... If it goes to 45 or 51 on Monday im good .... if not the deterioration of the options going into thursday will kill me. I will probabbly cash out wed after the fed makes it's statement.

Pretty much a move of 1 or 2 percent or more in the overall markets 2 days in a row is what im hopeing for , I have a feeling my 46 and 50 straddle won't work out so well but it was a gamble on a bigger move than I expect, but one that everyone else seems to expect.

The priceing didn't reflect the greek vote just the normal price of the options so I thought it was a good time to strike ..... pun intended ! lol

I am actually wanting for either 53 or better or 44 or worse if that happens and it moves in the same direction on the 3rd day it's gona do really well. 5-10 percent in a day is not unusual for this at all.

He will not be losing his life savings. The maximum he can lose is the total cost of the puts and spreads ie the commission. The beauty of options is that if a purchased option contract goes against you then it can be abandoned. It is an option to buy or sell, not an obligation to do so.

gold and silver it will always be worth something which you cant say about bonds and short/medium term property and large cap stocks will be fine the income might not be so we dont want to be forced into fire sales just to pay the bills. We have round 25% in PM and hope to increase that to 50% after which our property and stocks will be fine over next 15-20 years and in meantime even if gold drops 50% in real terms my family should be ok but with a large decrease in living standards and the champers will have to go as will 1 maid.

My wife might even have to work again smile.png now that will come as a shock after 17+ years. biggrin.png

I consider land in Thailand to be the best investment. Your wife can grow enough to feed you. You say that a farang cannot own land? Your wife can throw you out anytime? That is indeed true so you have to decide whether to trust your wife or the bank. I don't trust Wall Street, lawyers or banks so my gamble in on my wife. At least if things go bad she will be ahead and not some fat cat big wig corporate thief.

Have you considered that your wife might be considered sub-prime and not AAA some day?

interesting, the USD is in free fall vs. EUR, had lost all the ground it made yesterday.

What happened?

Relief on euro re Greek election plus anticipation of further monetary easing at forthcoming Fed meeting.

mo

netary easing from the fed is of course bad for the USD - looks like EUR and USD are racing down, while the Yuan watches, worried that it can't keep up.

But somewhere I read that China needs huge inflation to prevent a revolution...

Can you explain that as sitting here (in China) I would have said the opposite........or is there some irony i have missed?
