Poll: 59 percent of Thais use pirated software

BANGKOK, 22 May 2012 (NNT) According to survey results by Business Software Alliance (BSA), over 59 percent of computer users in the kingdom admitted to using pirated software on a regular basis.

Findings from the 2011 BSA Global Software Piracy Study showed that 74 percent of those surveyed in Thailand admitted to purchasing illegally obtained software. The survey also revealed that 72 percent of the installed software around Thailand is pirated, with a commercial value of 26 billion baht.

59 percent of the respondents admitted to frequent software license abuse, while 14 percent would purchase pirated software once in a while. Users of pirated software in the country, according to the survey, are aged between 18-44.

BSA spokesperson, Warunee Ratchatapattanakul, said the alliance and related government agencies are launching awareness campaigns, urging computer users to respect software property rights as software piracy hurts the kingdom’s economic growth.

The annual BSA Global Software Piracy Study was conducted in partnership with with International Data Corporation (IDC) and Ipsos Public Affairs. Nearly 15,000 computer users across 33 countries participated in the survey.

Amazing.... The BSA underestimates piracy for once in our lifetime. What's next? The RIAA admitting their piracy figures are just made up BS? wink.png

As usual, they assume that EVERY pirated copy is a lost sale... which it is not.

So I guess that lets me off the hook whistling.gif

It was a year ago and I'll never do it again. I LOVE THIGHLAND

Why would you "purchase" illegally obtained software? Surely, you just download it?

59% is very precise number, with 1% precision. They can not claim such accuracy in statistic research! They could say: - about 60%.

It is pure BS!

"59 percent of the respondents admitted to frequent software license abuse"

If 59 % admit it, it is 59 % who admit it.....that isn't a statistic.

It is a statistic if you say 59 % of the Thai people.

as software piracy hurts the kingdom’s economic growth.

How?

Pirated stuff works as well as paid for, how does business lose out? And at school having the most advanced software for kids to learn gives them an advantage over western schools who teach 4-5 year out of date stuff. That's why the whole software industry has moved to Asia, kids who learn at schools that use pirated stuff are light years ahead in ability.

Let me just lob this one in from the left field.

Let's just say that it was absolutely impossible for software to be hacked, it couldn't be done, and everyone had to pay the ticket price to use it.

Microsoft would have died decades ago, Linux or another Unix based OS would be on most PC's with a percentage of Apple OS users brining up a not so close second, and Open Office would be the de facto standard.

Most people who use cracked software, or download movies and music from torrents, wouldn't have shelled out for the original in the first place.
