I am quite sure to got the Dengue, starting yesterday in the morning. Fever around 39/40 but outrageousy head ache behind the eyes. Pain in bones, very weak and tired.

I live in Thailand for 3 years now, Kamala, Phuket. After some net reserche I found out there is no treatment. Only effect reducing.

What I do now ist taking Paracetamol, not more then 6 a day and wrapping towels with icewater orund neck/chest/face.

Due to very bad experiences with thai doctors I want to avoid hospital as long as possible. While I write this my temperatur is 39,5.

Am I too reckless? Who of you is thru with Dengue?

Thank you for help.

I stayed home and in bed when I had dengue drank alot of hydration drinks, and took paracetamol. If you are severely dehydrated or start bleeding then get to a hospital asap.

There are basically 3 concerns:

1. Dehydration: with a fever that high your fluid requirement is much increased. If one your own you can take in enough fluid that your urine remains light in color and you're peeing every couple of hours, OK, but if not, you may need a day or two in hospital on an IV drip.

2. Complications - with simple dengue, as long as you stay hydrated you're OK (won't feel like it, but you will be). However in a minority of cases hemorrhagic complications develop. In my experience, among adult farang getting dengue here, it is very rare for this to happen, but it can and in Dengie Hemorraghic Fever there is no choice, you must be hospitalized. There is a simple blood test (platlet count) that any lab can do that will warn if this is impending. Lacking that, as other posters said, be alert to any sign of bleeding including bruises or red dots (petechiae) that appear after no or very little trauma.

3. Lastly, have to consider the possibility that your self diagnosis may not be correct. There are things other than dengue that will produce high fever and headache...meningitis for example.

All things considered you would do best to at least get a Complete Blood Count (CBC) including platlets. If it is dengue the white blood count will be normal or low. If it is elevated, you have a bacterial infection and need immediate medical attention (probably hospitalization). Ditto if your platlets are below say 100,000 ditto though in that case the diagnosis most likely is dengue and concern would be developing hemorrghagic complications.

Sheryl, your concerns are my thoughts too. But I am in day three now and nothing worrisome has shown up until now. As long as it stay this way I try to stand it home.

Thanks for reply!

I had dengue in 2010 in Rawai. One thing to be aware of is that in bad cases you can't even think straight, it's like you're severely drunk or something. I hadn't eaten in 4 or 5 days and it didn't even compute that something was wrong. I could barely get out of bed and lifting a bottle of water to my mouth had me puffing like I'd run up a mountain. So I was also very dehydrated. Now any normal logic would say that I needed help but the problem was that I didn't have anywhere near normal logic or reason, I was well and truly gone. My wife was overseas and it was a friend who said mate you got dengue I'm bringing you to the hospital that pulled me through. This was on day 5 I think, they put me on a drip and gave me meds so that I could keep food down and after 5 days I was out.

I don't know how bad you have it but if you are going to do it at home then make sure you have someone there to look over you in case it turns for the worse.

Sorry to hear your ill get a blood test and find out, any clinic can do.

Also bluntly speaking if you really had Dengue of any concern, you wouldn't be sat on Thai visa as you would be to busy trying to recover.

Finally do not underestimate Dengue fever if you live alone and it really kicks in, normally at end of illness when rash breaks out is when you are at most danger. Your platelets drop low you become weak and you can find yourself in real trouble.

My wife has had 3 strains now last one nearly killed her, she also wanted home nursing as I'm a qualified remote medic. Guess what we ended up in hospital (ICU) within 12 hours she became very ill.Had she been alone she would of simply died in her bed.

Dengue needs to be taken very seriously, so go see a doctor immediately if you have any bleeding or severe rash. There are later dangers with Dengue which include post-dengue-depression which is a physical problem with long term effects caused by your platelet count not getting back to normal fast enough. Your doc can tell you how to avoid it. I went through the mildest form of Dengue a few years back and it really knocked me back.

It seems to the OP only wants to hear what he wants to hear....he doesnt even know if its Dengue....he is self diagnosing and self treating...everyone has told him to go to a hosptial or clinic...but he dont want to listen...

Quinine has no effect at all on dengue.

He had it confused with malaria, which was traditionally treated with quinine. (Can't cure a case of it solely with tonic water, though...plus the strains in SE Asia are often quinine resistant)

There isnt enough quinine in Tonic water to have any effect on malaria...the G&T story is an old colonial urban legend
