Burmese govt: President´s trip cancellation not related to Aung San Suu Kyi

BANGKOK, 6 June 2012 (NNT) - The Burmese government has confirmed that the cancellation of its president's trip to Thailand is not related to Aung San Suu Kyi's recent visit to the country, while stressing that the country's leader will travel to Thailand as soon as the situation in Myanmar returns to normal.

Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul stated that the Burmese government has affirmed that the postponement of President U Thein Sein's official visit to Thailand was not caused by the preceding trip of Myanmar's National League for Democracy (NLD) leader Aung San Suu Kyi to participate in the World Economic Forum on East Asia in Bangkok at the end of May.

Myanmar Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin cited the country's internal situation as the cause of the abrupt cancellation. He explained that there are currently protests against an electricity shortage as well as in certain industrial zones. Meanwhile, he added that the Burmese government understands and appreciates the efforts of its Thai counterpart in preventing Ms Suu Kyi's visit from impacting the friendship of both nations. The Burmese Foreign Minister stressed that President U Thein Sein will make an official trip to Thailand as soon as normalcy is restored in the country.

Truth Commission warns against rushed reconciliation

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Truth for Reconciliation Commission of Thailand (TRCT) on Wednesday issued a warning about inflaming the political strife if the government kept on pushing for the passage of the reconciliation bill in a hasty manner.

The TRCT said the rushed reconciliation would end up damaging the fence-mending efforts.

"As evidenced last week, the House tried to put the bill on the fast-track which resulted in driving a wedge in society," it said in the statement.

In order to avoid triggering political violence, relevant parties, particularly the government and the ruling Pheu Thai Party, should review the push for the bill's passage at this juncture.

"The opposing sides should also exercise restraint and refrain from provoking the other."

Further more, the public forum should be organised to kickstart a dialogue on reconciliation. Members of the public should have full access to pertinent informations to enabling them to understand and form a conclusion on issues related to reconciliation and amnesty.

The TRCT voiced concern that the last week's fracas in the House could set a bad precedent in the legislature which is a venerated institution.

All those involved in the unruly behaviour should step forward and accept responsibility for their misconduct, it said.

It went on to call on the judiciary, particularly the Constitution Court, to take extra precautions when dealing with politically-motivated cases. Doubts on the impartiality could hurt the confidence in the judicial integrity.

Past bloodshed should serve as a lesson on tragic losses. All sides should strive to settle the differences via peaceful means. The incitement of hatre, agitation and provocation should not be condoned.

PM asks all sides to fight against corruption

BANGKOK, 6 June 2012 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has expressed her worries over the corruption situation in Thailand, which is hindering the country’s development and asked all sides to fight against it.

During an exhibition and seminar on drug eradication strategy, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said Thailand scored only 3.4 out of 10 points and ranked 78th in the world on anti-corruption activities. According to her, corruption is a cycle deep-rooted in the society and she does not want to see the practice as the Thai culture.

The Premier said there should be no bribery, particularly position-buying practices, in any organizations, while those who work hard should be rewarded. She said the problem was not for any particular department to tackle but for everyone to work together to eradicate the mammoth corruption problems in Thailand.

Kittiratt confirms govt´s full support for anti-money laundering law

BANGKOK, 6 June 2012 (NNT) - The Deputy Prime Minister in charge of economy has expressed confidence that the anti-money laundering draft will be finalized before the meeting of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) takes place in February 2013.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Kittiratt Na Ranong stated that the government is rushing to amend and strengthen the country's legislation concerning money-laundering for fear that the country will be moved into the FATF's blacklist due to its failure to take sufficient steps against money laundering and terrorist financing activities. Thailand is currently included on the international agency's watch-list alongside 15 other nations.

According to Mr. Kittiratt, the anti-money laundering and anti-terrorism drafts have already been approved by the cabinet and are currently being reviewed by the Office of the Council of State before being submitted to parliament for deliberation. The Deputy Prime Minister has also reaffirmed the government's full support in this matter and is confident that the two bills will be ready in time for the FATF's meeting in February 2013.

Adul assigned to supervise crowd control

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Police General Adul Saengsingkaew, seen as close to the Democrats, has been assigned to take charge of crowd control in the face of the political volatility.

Adul, deputy national police chief seconded to lead the Office of Narcotics Control Board, is to assume an extra responsibility for security affairs in the Royal Thai Police, as per the order issued by national police chief General Priewpan Damapong on Wednesday.

Priewpan's order coincided with the volatility in which the red- and yellow shirts were gearing to resume street protests.

The yellow shirts organised two rallies last week and threatened to resume protesting if the government refused to abandon its push to enact the reconciliation bill, which many saw as a pretext to grant amnesty for ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The red shirts are scheduled tomorrow to rally at Parliament demanding the impeachment of the Constitution Court judges. The reds want to remove the judges who issued an injunction on the parliamentary vote for the charter change.

Many see Priewpan as shuffling the police line-up to cope with any political scenarios.

Last week Metropolitan Police commissioner Lt General Winai Thongsong and Metropolitan Police Region 1 commander Maj General Wichai Sangprapai were seconded to the police headquarters for 30 days.

The two are seen as "doves" for their records on crowd control.

Provincial Police Regions acting commissioner Maj General Kamronwit Thoopkrajang, seen as a "hawk", will assume Wina's responsibilties for a month.

Priewpan seems to have adopted a two-pronged strategy - designating Adul to reason with the opposition and having Kamronwit ready to rein in the anti-government protesters if talks fail.

Kamronwit, seen as close to the reds, will likely be a designated officer to handle the pro-government rallies.

Deputy PM: Transfer of 2 police station chiefs not related to anti-government banners

BANGKOK, 6 June 2012 (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Yongyuth Wichaidit, insisted that the lightning transfer of two police station chiefs in the capital is not related to the erection of anti-government banners.

Following the sudden transfer of superintendents of Samranrat and Thammasala Police Stations to inactive posts at Royal Thai Police headquarters for 30 days, the Deputy Prime Minister said that the move was not due to their failure to remove the anti-government posters in their area. Mr Yongyuth said their dismissal from the current posts is believed to follow their superiors’ evaluation of their respective performances.

He added that Pheu Thai MP Vicharn Minchainant is now in charge of the disposal of such banners.

In response to the posting of these banners, Mr Yongyuth further noted that it is within the country’s democratic framework, in which members of the public have the freedom to express themselves through speech and print media.

He elaborated that the Royal Thai police is prepared for untoward incidents between different political groups as public gathering can be held in any public areas in accordance with the rule of laws.
