Forests losing to contract farmers

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Natural Resources and Environment Ministry yesterday blamed the concept of contract farming, which is encouraging farmers to invade forestland.

"We believe this is a key reason behind the encroachment problem in headwater forest areas in the North, especially in the Nan River basin," the ministry's permanent secretary Chote Trachu said yesterday.

He explained that because investors offered free seeds, fertilisers and pesticides, farmers were eager to take up contract farming and did not think twice about invading forest zones.

"Every group in society, including these investors, should come up with a solution that will promote forest conservation and environmental protection," he said.

He added that Natural Resources and Environment Minister Preecha Rengsomboonsuk would soon invite investors, banks and relevant parties to discuss how they can prevent forest encroachment.

According to the ministry, commercial agricultural activities have been eating into forestland. In the Nan River Basin, as many as 1.27 million rai of forestland has been encroached into.

Suwit Rattanamanee, directorgeneral of the Royal Forest Department, said relevant authorities had launched a project to provide plots in degradedforest zones to interested people under the condition that they engage in reforestation activities.

"For instance, of 100 rai, they can use 20 rai to grow rice for their livelihood and use the rest for reforestation," he said.

Suwit added that his department had 3,000 rai for the pivotal phase of this project. "We will survey degraded forest zone across the country to find more plots," he said.

Transport Ministry to help prompt transport operators for AEC

BANGKOK, 7 June 2012 (NNT) – The Transport Ministry is set to help make the country’s transport service operators ready for the realization of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015.

Transport Minister Charupong Ruangsuwan said on Wednesday that, for Thai transport service providers to be ready for a more liberal market when the AEC is realized in 3 years’ time, all operators should start picking up more knowledge how the requirements in other ASEAN countries are like, including respective traffic regulations and signs.

Mr. Charupong stated that, with business operators in ASEAN to collaborate more and go into more joint investment agreements, much is needed to be done for the Thai transport service sector.

Meanwhile, Thai Transporting Truck Association chairman Vasuchet Sophonsathien conceded that local service providers are not adequately informed about the emergence of the AEC and its impact on them.

He stated that most entrepreneurs still have no clue about how they will be able to expand their business into other AEC countries.

As a start, Mr. Vasuchet said that the association is joining related state and private agencies to hold a series of training sessions to educate those-in-need about routes in other countries. However, he is asking the government to provide more education and details in order to get everyone on the same pace as soon as possible.
