Consumers throng Blue Flag Market at Hua Lamphong station

BANGKOK, 9 June 2012 (NNT) - The atmosphere at the Blue Flag Market held by the Ministry of Commerce at the Hua Lamphong train station has been lively, with consumers continually arriving to buy low-cost products.

Customers include passers-by who are on their way to other provinces and residents from surrounding areas. Mrs. Siriporn Thongparn, a 58-year-old citizen who came to make purchases at the market, stated that she wished the government would hold such events every 1 to 2 months, because products in the Blue Flag markets are sold at a lower price than those in the general market. The project really helps to reduce living expenses, she said.

The Blue Flag Market at Hua Lamphong Station will run until June 11. Products on sale include rice, chicken eggs, vegetable oil, and pork, among others.

Ancient human remains found in Si Sa Ket province

SI SA KET, 9 June 2012 (NNT) - Residents of Bueng Boon in Si Sa Ket province have discovered human skeletal remains and objects believed to be ancient artifacts. The remains together with age-old pottery and weapons were unearthed and collected in two separate bundles when reporters reached the scene. The discovery was made next to a utility pole in front of a house whose owner spearheaded the digging.

After the initial discovery was made, residents helped to dig further in hopes to unearth more ancient utensils and human skeletons. They believe there is still a large portion of remains and artifacts underground and those objects may lie more than 10 meters deep. The residents also believe what they have discovered had been likely buried for at least a thousand years.

Mrs. Gaysorn Butrsri, owner of the house, revealed that on Visakha Bucha day she dreamed of a man who told her to dig in the area where the discovery was made. The remains and all claimed artifacts were discovered at a depth of about 10 meters underground.

Mrs. Gaysorn and other residents said they would continue to unearth more of the human remains and give them the proper religious rites.

Southern provinces remain inundated

RANONG, June 9 - Thailand's southern provinces remain under floodwater due to continued heavy downpour, with residents in some high risk areas advised to evacuate due to possible landslides.

In Ranong, the road connecting La-un and Thung Tako districts was cut off after heavy rains overnight. The road was an important route for transporting agricultural produce and facilitating about one thousand commuters each day.

Landslides were also possible in several locations if heavy rains continued.

In Surat Thani, three villages in Phrasaeng district were inundated, with five hundreds houses under 1-3 metres of floodwaters.

Some 70 families were evacuated to safe areas during the night, but a number of villagers were still stranded there.

The Surat Thani Provincial Administration Organisation conducted rescue operation to evacuate the stranded residents out of the villages but the mission struggled due to torrential floodwaters.

People living along Sok and Poomduang canals were also ordered to leave their homes to stay at temporary shelters provided by local agencies, as canal waters spilled over banks due to forest run-off.

However, in Trang province, the flood situation in six districts began to ease and was expected to return to normal within a couple days if there was no additional rain.

Floodwater remained in only six low-land sub-districts of the provincial seat in areas connected to the Trang river.

Meanwhile, the Chiang Mai provincial disaster prevention and mitigation office on Saturday issued a warning to 25 districts, especially 243 high-risk villages in 19 districts.

The office announced the northern meteorological centre forecasted that heavy rains were expected in 1-2 days, covering 80 percent of the region.

People living along foothills and near waterways were advised to beware of landslides and forest run-off. (MCOT online news)
