Students bar protest leader from school

The Nation on Sunday

Some 500 students and alumni of Bodindecha (Sing Singhaseni) School gathered there yesterday to prevent a man who led a student protest against the school's admissions policy from entering.

Mongkholkit Suksinthara-nont, the head of an anti-corruption network, who led the protest, accompanied parents and 52 students who registered for afternoon and weekend courses in upper secondary education to a meeting with the school director, Suwat Wiwattananon.

However, a group of students and alumni refused to allow the school's entrance gate to be opened, preventing him from getting inside. Singthong Buachoom, an adviser to the education minister, and 10 police officers spent 15 minutes negotiating with him, asking him not to accompany the parents and students.

After Mongkholkit agreed, the group finally allowed the others in. An alumnus said they did not want Mongkholkit to be involved with the school or its students anymore, so that the situation could return to normal and the students in the afternoon and weekend courses would be able to start their studies.

More deaths amid rioting in western Myanmar

Eleven Media

Rakhine State, Myanmar

MYANMAR: A crowd looks on as a Buddhist community in Myanmar

More than a dozen residents of a Buddhist community in troubled Rakhine State in western Myanmar have been killed in a riot by Rohingya Muslims.

Authorities have imposed a curfew in Maungdaw town, where Rohingyas started rioting soon after returning from Friday's prayers. They threw stones at Rakhine houses and buildings, according to Ko Win Maung, whose house was also burned down amid the violence.

The death toll was estimated at between 20 and 30 as of Friday evening.

Rohingyas are mostly stateless Muslims of South Asian descent and subjected to tight restrictions by the authorities.

The curfew prohibits residents of Maungdaw and Buthedaung towns from going outside between 6pm and 6am.

Contrary to foreign media reports, the army did not fire at the mobs, but instead fired warning shots, according to the reporter's eyewitness account.

"Up to now, the handling of the army in this violence is smooth and flexible. It was reportedly known that the military fired only warning shots. Although the case seems to be a problem between Muslims and Buddhists, there may be some incitements behind the incident," said Dr Than Htut Aung, chairman and CEO of the Eleven Media Group.

Dr Aye Maung, chairman of the Rakhine Ethnics Development Party, said the situation was "very serious", particularly in Maungdaw. "The problem should be solved by legal procedures. We do not accept anarchic actions. Security forces concerned should settle the problem systematically. We must control the situation [and keep it from spreading]. If the problem becomes bigger, it could possibly result in a series of cases," Aye Maung said.

"I warned of the possibility of problems in Maungdaw after the case of Sittwe. These attacks will seriously threaten the Arakanese people, not only in Buthidaung and Maungdaw townships, but also in some areas where they are the minority. The government is responsible for calming down the worries of these people.

Bookies and football gamblers arrested

Jessada Jantharak,

Praphan Jindalert-udomdee

The Nation on Sunday

BANGKOK: -- Five bookmakers and 55 gamblers were arrested with gambling lists worth Bt2.5 million and Bt23,500 in cash after the first match of Euro 2012 began on Friday.

Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy chief Pol Maj-Gen Saroj Phrom-charoen told a press conference yesterday that MPB Division 4 had seized Bt2.1 million worth of gambling lists from three bookmakers and six gamblers, while Division 9 had nabbed the most gamblers - 19.

"Police got a tip-off that lots of gambling areas are entertainment venues that provide facilities for customers to watch live broadcasts of the football matches, while some are close to educational institutions and dormitories in areas under responsibility of Hua Mak, Wangthonglang and Din Daeng police stations," Saroj said.

He said people who violated gambling laws would be jailed for a year and/or pay fines up to Bt1,000.

Pheu Thai Party spokesman Promphong Nopparit said yesterday people had complained that there were many gambling sites on the Internet. So, the ruling party would tell the Information and Communications Technology Ministry to strictly inspect websites to try to prevent football gambling, especially among youngsters. It would also write to the Royal Thai Police to urge it to seriously suppress gambling.

Man shot dead, 8 hurt in separate attacks in Pattani

The Nation on Sunday

PATTANI: -- A bomb exploded in Pattani's Muang district early yesterday, injuring two monks, three civilians making merit, and three soldiers.

All of eight sustained minor injuries and received treatment at Pattani Hospital.

Police said the explosion erupted at 6.50 am in front of a shop on Charoon Samran Road, just three metres away from where the monks received alms from people.

Three soldiers were at the scene because they were providing a security escort to the two monks, who were injured by another explosion last year.

A police inquiry found the bomb was hidden under a concrete sheet and detonated by a cell phone.

Meanwhile, a man was shot dead in Pattani's Panare district. Police are investigating to determine whether the fatal shooting was related to the unrest or a personal conflict.

Rolls-Royce set to open aircraft part production base in Thailand

BANGKOK, 10 June 2012 (NNT) – A major British aero-engine manufacturer has expressed an interest to expand its production facilities to Thailand.

Permanent Secretary for Industry Witoon Simachokedee said that Britain’s Rolls-Royce, which is the world’s leading aero-engine manufacturer, is now interested in making an investment in Thailand, in the form of a new manufacturing base for ASEAN market.

Mr. Witoon added that Rolls-Royce has also got a plan to invest in Thailand’s energy business.

According to the Permanent Secretary for Industry, the leading British manufacturer is in the middle of its feasibility study, with an eye fixed on Thailand’s eastern seaboard as its probable manufacturing base.

Mr. Witoon said that Rolls-Royce has informed him that, if its plan is realized, a large number of jobs will be created for Thailand and that it will need numerous investment incentives from the Board of Investment of Thailand to go on with the plan.

Rolls-Royce has first entered ASEAN through Singapore, where it has invested in the research and development sector, with an investment of around 10 billion baht.

Academics predict Euro crisis fallout to hurt Thai exports considerably

BANGKOK, 10 June 2012 (NNT) – Academics have been worried that the Euro financial crisis may hurt Thai exports considerably.

Director of the International Trade Center of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) Att Pisarnvanich said that the center has estimated that the economic problems in European Union (EU) will likely lead to the global economic slowdown, which will cause Thailand to miss its 2012 export growth target of 15 percent.

The center has presented 2 scenarios under the assumption that the EU crisis persists. In the first scenario, Thailand will be able to find new markets to make up for lost trade in Europe and eventually manage to push the export growth rate to 10-12 percent.

Mr. Att said that, under the second scenario, the EU economy suffers a minus growth, the situation that leads Thai exports to grow between 8 and 9 percent.

He stated that Thai exports to EU are currently worth 700 billion baht and represented 10 percent of the country’s total export value of 7 trillion baht.

Mr. Att went on to say that if Spain and Italy, whose imports from Thailand are equivalent to 13 percent of Thai-EU trade, suffer similar problems like Greece, Ireland and Portugal, Thai exports to this major economic bloc will plunge around 100 billion baht and push GDP down by 0.5 percent.

Special Report: Ananda Mahidol Day

The Thai people, on the 9th of June of every year, commemorate the death of King Ananda Mahidol, the eighth monarch of the Chakri dynasty and a young king who made great contributions to medical and educational development in Thailand.

Born on 20th September 1925 in Heidelberg, Germany, King Ananda Mahidol was the second child of His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol of Songkhla and Mom Sangwan, who later became Princess Sri Nagarindra, the Princess Mother. He was also the grandson of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and the elder brother of King Bhumibol Aduyadej of Thailand.

King Rama VIII ascended the throne on 2nd March 1934 at the age of 9, when he was still a student in Switzerland, following the abdication of his uncle, King Prajadhipok (Rama VII). The throne was passed to the young prince while the country was undergoing a major change; its administrative system shifted abruptly from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy due to the coup of 24th June 1932. However, King Ananda Mahidol and his family had chosen to remain in Switzerland for the purpose of their education and safety during World War II. After assuming kingship, the young monarch only visited Thailand twice.

In December 1945, King Ananda Mahidol returned to Thailand for the second time for his coronation ceremony. However, the young king died on 9 June 1946 due to a bullet wound, at the mere age of 21. The untimely death of the young king caused great sorrow for the Thai people. After his death, the crown was passed to his younger brother, Prince Bhumibol.

During his lifetime, King Rama VIII desired to create more medical schools in the country with aims to produce a sufficient number of medical staff to help the Thai people. Back then, only one medical school existed in Thailand, Siriraj Hospital, which could only accommodate 50 students at the most. Thus, King Rama VIII's idea prompted the establishment of what is today the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University. In remembrance of His Majesty's graciousness, the Faculty of Medicine has designated 9th June of each year as the day to pay homage to the late king.

On Ananda Mahidol Day 2012, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej presided over the unveiling of the King Rama VIII statue, which will become a new landmark of Bangkok. Built as a tribute to the late king, the statue is situated at the foot of the Rama VIII Bridge. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has also constructed a public park in the area, which was named by HM the King as “Suan Luang Rama VIII”.
