Labour Ministry extends alien worker registration to December

BANGKOK, 11 June 2012 (NNT) – The Labour Ministry has extended the foreign worker registration period, from June 14th to December 14th this year, after it has found that many migrant workers still have not registered to be legal workers.

The ministry has revealed that currently over 1 million migrant workers are legal. Ninety percent of them are Burmese, followed by Cambodian and Laotian. However, the number of illegal migrant workers remains high; therefore, the Labor Ministry has decided to extend the period for foreign labour registration to December.

Currently, the government is encouraging foreign workers from neighboring countries to work in Thailand. When the nation was hit by flood last year, many foreign workers returned to their home countries and never come back. As a result, Thailand is now in need of more foreign workers, especially in the fields of fishery, agriculture, and construction.

As the ASEAN Community is set to take place in 2015, an expert on alien worker management has suggested that the government prepare to bring in migrant workers as demand for labour will eventually rise. He said that workers in all provinces must be legal, and training is needed to develop their skill.

Yongyuth warns people against blocking roads

BANGKOK: -- Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit Monday warned the people against blocking roads to highlight their grievances, saying the government would no longer tolerate with such practices.

Yongyuth said the people could submit their complaints to the government about their grievances but they had to avoid violating the laws by blocking roads.

"If they block roads, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and the government will not tolerate it. The government will not give in to demands made through mob rules," Yongyuth said.

He cited the case of three leaders of protesters in Pathum Thani as a warning example. He said the three leaders were sentenced to Bt1,000 fine each and one-month jail term for blocking a road in Pathum Thani over dissatisfactions on flood compensations. The jail term was suspended.

Korkaew calls on Parliament president to go ahead with 3rd reading

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Red-shirt leader and Pheu Thai MP Korkaew Pikulthong Monday called on Parliament President Somsak Kiartsuranon to go ahead with the third reading of the charter amendment bill despite a court injunction against it.

Korkaew said Somsak should ignore threats that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and the Cabinet would be taken legal action against if bill is deliberated in the third reading on Tuesday.

He said the amendment bill does not have any wording that would cause the amendment to be regarded as an effort to topple the Monarchy Constitution as alleged by the opponents.

Korkaew said if Somsak dared not go ahead with the third reading, the red-shirt people would no longer defend a "coward Parliament president".

Suvarnabhum's runway renovation starts tomorrow

The Nation

30183949-01_big.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Thai AirAsia informed its passengers today that some flight times and schedules may be affected during June 11-August 9, as renovation of Suvarnabhumi Airport's east runway will be carried out.

Airport of Thailand announced four days ago that it will close the east runway during June 11-August 9, for the first renovation after the airport was opened in 2006. The operator did not expect any troubles as the period is normally a low season. Now, the airport caters service to 120,000 passengers per day, against 170,000 during the high season. It is also coordinating with airports under its supervision like the ones in Chiang Mai and Phuket, as well as U-Tapao. They could provide supporting services in case of emergency.

In a statement issued today, Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia, said that as a result of the renovation, some flight times and schedules may be affected. Passengers are advised to stay alert and informed about their travel schedule by checking their flight times once they arrive at the airport in order to proceed with their travel plans accordingly.
