I imagine it's more to do with copies not getting spotted by foreign company employees than race.

There's also a lot of Japanese only signs around Thailand at a certain type of entertainment venues also no Thais only foreigners are allowed into another kind of entertainment venue.

The 'No Thais' sign is in English, it's to stop foreigners taking prostitutes back to their room.

I figure they thought 'No Thai prostitutes' was too rude.

I have heard it before. The no Thai sign is to prevent from farang bringing a prostitute into the room. Not a discrimination issue.

I think my professional Thai wife would have a major problem with it, if we didn't know and had booked their accommodation...

It would be a pretty boring Video - with our keyboard warrior Farang equality activist being repeatedly shown the door, giving the "cop" yet another Baht 500 to be let back in again ........ and repeat.

If the shop does not want to serve him they simply won't, he can play with the "revolving door" or stand in the shop all day and be ignored, up to him - at the end of the day all that will be achieved is an empty pocket for him .......... and a very happy Policeman.

I do think there are more urgent problems to be addressed in Thailand.

The video may be slightly amusing when he gets arrested for criminal trespass, he can also film his time in the police station as well....maybe he will go on hunger strike to protest this blatant discrimination against farangs, he may be even be so lucky as to be beaten around the head by a metal detector weilding security guard..laugh.png .....I await with baited breath and great anticipation for this video to be published..

Probably because they have no English speaking staff on hand, and are fed up with foreigners thinking if they shout louder they will be understood!!

This is the true definition of a Thai apologist. What reason do you have to believe that? From the sign, it is quite an assumption to make.

I believe this comes from the colonial attitude that foreigners know best what Thais are thinking, even when they say something different. They just don't get it that the person might actually mean what they say.

To me, this notion is more insulting than taking their word for it.

This sign is NO different from those in the South (US) in the fifties that said "Whites only" or "No jews of dogs allowed."

Lucky for the Thais who are racist jerks (not all of them, of course), they have people like you to defend them.

I was making apologies for no one, just stating the obvious. By using the word "sorry" in the sign the shop owner was clearly apologetic for not being able to cater for customers other than Thai.

If they were "racist jerks" as you suggest then i am sure the sign would have just said "f)&k off falang"!!

There you go apologizing for this racist jerk again, geez. And by the way, the sign would never say that, grow upwink.png

Tywais - you seem attached to that statute in the Thai constitution. Can you explain then why this statute doesn't seem to affect the prevalent double-pricing in public (national parks) and private institutions?

Is the sign dumb? in my opinion, from a business standpoint, yes.

Should it be compared to the ingrained racist segregation in the US south pre-1965? No.

Should they be allowed to put the sign up at all? Up to the Thais.

Is answering your own questions a useful rhetorical device? No.

Why are Americans always doing it? No idea.

I think my professional Thai wife would have a major problem with it, if we didn't know and had booked their accommodation...

In my experience hotels with these types of policies are perfectly fine with a couple booking and checking in together, and if they are similar in age and actually married I'm sure 99.99% of the time there's no problem.

Many places won't otherwise allow older guys with young "girlfriends" on the premises, because they're catering to families and others who are offended by such sites - "zero tolerance for drugs and sex tourists" is the prominent sign I recall seeing. The Atlanta hotel used to not even allow me and my wife to come in and eat in the restaurant, and of course I wasn't happy about it, but IMO was correct in just accepting it (she was over 18 but barely, and looked all of 16, maybe).

Other places "discourage" it by levying the famous "guest fee", the fancier the place the higher the fee.

Places like Oriental/Peninsula etc you have to go through the concierge and your "escort" gets smuggled in the servant's entrance.

Also fair enough IMO, nothing racist about it, I'm usually for putting practicalities above principles.

Perfectly legal for governments and private insitutions to give preference on the basis of nationality and residency. But not on race or gender.

And it is nationality and residency which is the deciding factor in your examples (Always for former and mostly the latter)

I, despite being 6ft 1 and have looks approching Spanish, get in on the local price with my Thai ID. So does my daughter, who is 6 years old, and looks as if she was lifted out of the latest IKEA catelogue, as she too, is a Thai national. My NZ national wife usually gets by on her Thai DL or Yellow house book.

The constitutional court has actually ruled on cases where there have been attempted legal discrimination based at Thai's with mixed hertiage, and to those women with foreign husbands.

The former threw out laws which required those with foreign fathers or mothers to have higer educational requirements to enter parliament than those who had natural born Thai citizens. The latter threw out restrictions on those married to foreigners to owning land.

Are you sure its not more to do with the hotel's not wanting the bad publilcity that an old farang has expired in the hotel room while servicing their young "girl friends"....tongue.png

but leads me neatly into my next question regarding the recent "holding hands" thread and some of comments about old farangs and young girls holding hands, which some of the posters believed was offensive, while other beleived it wasnt and it is ok.....If it is truely ok...why are hotel's banning the "young GF's" then if truely not "offensive"

The OP in that thread was acting as if holding hands in and of itself was inappropriate.

It eventually came out that he (and others) were more offended by old farang with young TGFs.

And of course it's ridiculous to make such discrimination, in itself far more offensive than what they're banning IMO, let's see them try the same with gays.

But it's their property, I won't be manning the barricades, commercial rights rule. . .

Thanks samran, that was pretty much how I was going to word it except yours is more succinct. Thailand is not unique in the dual pricing schemes as there are western countries, even the US, that have multi-tier pricing based on residency, tourists, even age (senior benefits), etc.

There should be more signs like this in Thailand.

Lets start with your home and the places you haunt. Your wife and kids are OK, but you sir, dreadfully sorry, you have to leave.

Viva la signs!!! We'll teach those politically correct bastards to question us. Yes we will.

I think you overestimate the rudeness of "shut up" or even "shut your pie hole", it's not worth getting so upset you should challenge me to online fisticuffs. giggle.gif

My points are three:

Everyone knows the Thai Constitution is worth less than the paper its written on, there is no rule of law here.

And even if that were relevant, I think you'll find private individuals and businesses are not prevented by Thai law from discriminating based on any of the categories so protected in western countries. This is even true for hiring, much less excluding whatever class of customers they don't like.

And finally, as you can see the vast majority of posters here couldn't give a flying flick about this issue, it's just such a trivial issue it isn't worth wasting time on as you point out. If you want to fight real racism in Thailand, get to work on preventing the slavery-like trafficking and abuse of Burmese, Rohinga labor in the fishing industry, also sanctioned and permitted by the inhuman mafia that runs this place, now that's an issue worth getting upset about. An IP-violating scam shop choosing not to do business with foreigners isn't.

Sorry I could not directly reply, apparently there were to many quotes according to TV.

whistling.gif I have no idea what that original shop and the rather out-of focus photo with it is supposed to be.

However, I have seen signs in Bangkok with signs that said "For Thai Customer Only".

Outside they had photos of rather expensive looking houses they would build for you for a price.

What they refered to (I asked) was real estate....they were selling the land and houses in a Thai housing project area in Bangkok.

In that case they were selling the house and the LAND it was built on as one unit.

And what they MEANT to say was they could not sell the property to a foriegner because the foriegner could not own the land unless they were a Thai permanent resident.

But just to be clear....there are, or at least used to be, certain "Japanese only" establishments...usually bars with female hostesses or massage places...where any customers but Japanese are strongly discouraged...to say the very least.

And then of course there are the "members only" clubs everywhere, aren't there?

Oh, and how about the "Buisness Class Only" lounges at airports?

You see, it's not as uncommon as you think, is it?

Have you ever tried to have your Thai wife book a room for you in certain 5 star hotels in Bangkok?

In some hotels they are very reluctant to let her book a room, but when you appear (as a Farang) suddenly there IS a room available after all?

So, although it's usually kept discreet, such "income-and-assumed-status discrimination" isn't as uncommon as you might like to think.

(No, sir, you can not enter the restaurant without a Coat and Tie).

It's just that such discrimination is accepted and acceptable in "polite" society.

I would say their loss. It's quite embaressing that most neighboring countries around Thailand can speak more English than they do and they still claim to be the better one. How many times do people need to be reminded that this is a developing country? Therefor there will always be strange occurances such as this one.

I am happy to see this.It is far better than going to a place where I am not welcome but barely tolerated because of P.C rules and laws.

John Kennedy had to resign from a favourite club when running for president because there were no black members....WHY?

Many respectable thai families do not want to take their children to places where aged foreigners with the custom of dressing in sleeveless string vests, skimpy shorts and are smooching with young issan females are in attendance.

Even if both members of the couple are dressed respectably and no smooching going on or even god forbid holding hands - if he's "too old" and she's "too young" then, not just Thais but many foreign tourists feel the same way, both families and young backpacker types.

Good to know there are some places providing sanctuary for those so easily offended and/or disgusted.
