BANGKOK: -- Thai Airways International chairman Ampon Kittiampon reiterated lack of unity in communications as the reason for the dismissal of the airline's president Piyasvasti Amranand.

In a testimony to the House Committee on Transport, he said that such was witnessed in the conflicting opinions between the board of directors and the president over the acquisition of 37 aircraft. He insisted that if THAI needed to inform the Cabinet of any financial change, or the airline could be violating the Criminal Code’s Article 157.

He added that the board of directors thoroughly considered the decision, with consultation with the Audit Committee. He said that this followed a significant change in the company’s finances, as THAI had to borrow Bt15 billion after the Bt5 billion recapitalisation.

To the committee’s question why Piyasvasti was dismissed despite his high performance scores, Ampon declined to give the answer as Piyasvasti and THAI labour union chairperson Jamsri Sukchotirat were present in the meeting room. Saying that he would give the answer strictly to the House Committee, he insisted that the decision was not politically motivated and it was the judgement of all directors.

Early May, Piyasvasti’s employment contract was prematurely terminated. Ably turning around the company’s finances, he had a month in office after the notification. Given that he was appointed to office during the Abhisit government, it was believed that the Pheu Thai government wants to nominate its representative for the top job at the state enterprise.
