'When in Rome, do as the Romans do"

I am going to have to go against the flow here. All the Thai's want is respect to be shown against their monarchy, buddhist religion and cultural/national issues. They do go too far and are unnecessarily paranoid about some things but there is nothing wrong about being a proud patriotic nation!!!

There is nothing wrong in her carrying the Thai flag as long as she did nothing to deface it or degenerate it. Someone posted that she did not. So no problem.

As for the paranoid proud patriotic nation. Yes there is. That's how wars are started.

The only wars that the Thai's have been involved in is in protecting their territory from the French, Burmese etc:. Us, the Brit's fought the Argies over the Falklands and the Yanks fought Vietnam over.......? In terms of what you've described nationalistic patriotism as then we must be either 'super proud patriots' or just plain stupid, then!!!

A crack team of Commandos must be sent immediately to the United States. If they fail, war must be declared. How can life as we know it possibly continue with this, this Gaga at large?

What tarnishes Thailand's image: Lady Gaga displaying the national flag during her concert

What does NOT tarnish Thailand's image: fake goods sold at avery street corner (including fake Lady Gaga CDs), pornography on open sale everywhere, double-charging foreign visitors, prostitution wherever you go (some NGOs claim there are over 1 million hookers in this country), inept government with clowns acting as MPs, institutionalised corruption at every level of society, jet ski and gem scams, appalling driving standards frequently resulting in horrible accidents, xenophobia, double standards and hypocrisy, a culture ministry staffed by clowns, a country being led from abroad by a fugitive felon, red shirt/yellow shirt menace, etc., etc.

I hope she's paying someone for all this publicity.

People like Lady Gaga thrive on scandal. It wouldn't be a surprise if she happened to have payed some local official or media person to blow up the "offensive behavior"

I'd be very surprised.

What a crock of S_HIT, like stated before the kids at the concert more then likely loved it, it is the old prunes that have nothing better to do than make a big deal of all this. Why don't they get a grip, and get realcheesy.gif

This means that if you are in Saudi Arabia and you see a father stoning his daughter you will help him because 'When in Rome, do as the Romans do", is that correct?

Let me assume that you won't do it! If there is something that is clearly wrong in another country, to accept it because it is cultural is simply wrong!

Crikey, I had a nap, and this happened.

Heaven only knows how many world shattering events happen while I'm catching forty winks.

Will you ever be able to sleep soundly again after today?....

I was using this as an expression pertinent to this example. All I am suggesting is that we should observe nations traditions and cultural beliefs by acting in an appropriate way to show respect and not cause offence!!!!

You are correct about the wars..the Falkland's is British so we defended it. Vietnam ..ummmm pretty sure it was never American. And any war can be described as stupid especially economic wars like Iraq.

But back to Lady GaGa. Small minded culture minister overstated the problem ... again.

I am not arguing the fact that their response is way over the top but you know how touchy Thai's are about these things.

I don't think this hideous monster weirdo will be invited back again too soon!!! What I'd like to know is just why posters go apeshit over pictures of women posted on Thai visa eg: Yingluck - is she really attractive???? If they showed a woman as ugly as sin wearing skimpy clothes, you could guarantee that all these saucy remarks would materialise - doesn't make sense to me!!

I attended as well and it seemed even the many 'accompanying ' the Royal party members present were unperturbed at the time, or at least cognizant that those in the same party were clearly enjoying the show. And there were uniforms in abundance among them.

The picture at the beginning of the article however, though some of your posts might have thought otherwise, is not indeed of Lady G herself but of the person/ladyboy who was very visible to many of us the whole evening, both outside before, and inside in the front row during the concert, and from whom she "borrowed" the headdress for that one number , and to add to her already 'colorful' wardrobe.

It was a weird and wonderful collection and her costumes, compared to the audiences, were nowhere near the most outlandish on the night, and a great display from those many who came out on the night, and many of them 'out of the closet' in their dress, especially for that occasion.

If the Indonesians don't want her, and she were to come again, it is worth the price of admission for the audience antics alone!

It's not even a charge that she disrespected Thailand's national symbol, culture or monarch. There are laws on the books about some of those things. They are saying she hurt the the Thai people's feelings! Yes, for days after that event people throughout the nation were seen quietly weeping at their workplaces or openly sobbing in the streets. She's just the brand of western weird that Thais love. My 35 y/o Thai wife, who is not really a pop music fan, knew all about Lady Gaga the day she arrived. I think her concert sold-out in less than 48 hours. I'm also sure she could do 2 more sold-out concerts like that right now so where's the national hurt? "Please please cultural ministry step in and file a complaint so my feelings can never be trampled by this monster again."
