Fortuner + Extra Security?

Featured Replies

I am planning to drive down as far as Singapore on a 6 week trip to Malaysia, and have been advised that the Fortuner is a prime target for car thieves in Malaysia. The vehicle is now 5 years old and as far a I am aware is only fitted with the 'standard alarm system' which car thieves can overcome quite easily. I intend to buy a 'wheel lock' and 'Brake pedal lock' as a visual deterrent from 'Raiton' along with a 'spare wheel lock'. I would like to get into the wiring loom, to put a manual cutout switch in either the fuel pump circuitry or ignition (or both) and intend to install this in the lockable glove compartment, something I did back in the UK on my Saab Turbo. I would be obliged if anybody can suggest or supply photos of where I should try and 'break into' the loom. I am quite happy to put a couple of switches in various parts of the car to stop any attempt at stealing the vehicle. I intend to move the horn from its present mounting position as this I understand is the first thing that thieves disable. A bonnet lock is also another possibility that i am looking into having made up and don't know if one is commercially available.

If you have any other suggestions as to added security I would be most obliged to hear from you.

I have tried to buy an extension of my 1st class insurance for my trip, but my insurance company LMG are not prepared to provide this and I am given to understand that I can only buy third party insurance when I enter Malaysia, which is a bit of a worry. If anybody has any personal knowledge of what is required for a Malaysian trip I would be interested to hear from you. At the moment I understand that I must obtain an 'English Translation' of the car registration documents from the local Thai authorities with their stamp affixed and my number plates will have to be 'translated' when I cross the border where I buy my insurance, other than that, I don't know of any other conditions that I will be required to adhere to, other than the tint on the windows not exceeding 75% - which they do not.

I have had fitted a pedal lock by 'Locktech' on my Fortuner it also cut's out the ignition and has two lock's to undo before it releases very strong price just over 2.000bt fitted. I wouldn't bother with the spair wheel lock as they have to open the rear door to jack it down but up to you as they say. Have a good trip.

Thanks for the info. Where did you get this fitted?

There should be 3 hooters, 2 at the front and one near the bulkhead on the inner wing, drivers side that can't be got at (theory).

There is a small wire going to the starter motor to activate it when you turn the key. Break into this wire and back to the cab switch. I am assuming your ride is auto so no push start. smile.png

Thanks 'Transam'. Yes, it is auto, so that's a help. Any idea where you can buy good grades of switches for low voltage d.c. work?

Thanks for that 'Spoonman'

There are in your cab spaces for Toyota extra switches. You could fit one that looks standard but has writing on it for another use. smile.png
