What'S Up At California Wow? Doors Closed...

Hi Tony's gym sold 400 combined yearly and lifetime m emberships in the last month. im not sure if that is good or bad.

Source ?

Don't worry about the source. The number sounds spot on.

He sold over 200 lifetimes on August 4. Before that he sold a lot of memberships to ex-California members who either didn't want to fork out the 15K or before they knew about the lifetime deal. You may remember he was offering discounts to ex-California Wow members.

That was a brilliant strategy. He had 3 weeks to get as many members as possible at full price, and then he got the rest with his lifetime deal. He probably netted close to 5 million baht.

He's got the market to himself right now.

Will he spend this on a new car, or put it back into his gyms? After only training there 4 times (in 3 different gyms) I know of at least a dozen machines which need repair or maintenance... and I've only scratched the surface.

I know the answer to that question, and I'm sure you do also.

i train at the main gym at night there was a meeting at 11pm i think a dozen staff were there saying Tony is coming in later. I ask the the receptionist who was holding heaps of applications forms how many new people joined. She said 400 mixed. Boss come in later.......Look i must say its a great gym and its soo hot at night i get cardio as an added bonus cause its sooo dam_n hot. At least they turn on the fans lol. But the machines are perfect for weightlifting / bodybuilding im not sure what everyone is complaining about ? Really good equipment i feel but thats because i stick to mainly compound excercises and then do a few isolated one it works for me. I think his house must be the next to the thai only gym all gated up with really nice white cars parked out the front ? Edited by ray35ty

The complaining is all warranted. I'll give some little clues....

The equipment maintenance is really bad, so if you used more machines then you'd find plenty which don't work or work badly. So far I've tried to use 2 Lifecycles (one in Main gym and one in Jomtien), and they were both faulty. One could still be used in a limited way, the other one not at all. I've tried both of his Concept 2 Rowers (in 2 different gyms) and both are f******d. Obviously no maintenance has ever been done on them. DB's missing, bent barbells, barbells rusted up with loose collars - even the free weights are looking sad. This is just a little clue but there's so much more.

Of course these gyms will do the trick if there isn't any better around - but that doesn't make them great.

BTW, increased heart rate due to heat stress is not "cardio". You may as well just sit in a sauna for all the good it will do you.

You consider the machines at Tony's perfect?

You think you get cardio thrown in for free because you sweat so much from the hot temperatures inside?

I suggest you do some basic research on power training and find out how much of the benefits you actually lose because the temperatures are too high, not to speak about the injuries you can get with those machines that are out of balance.

I have trained at Tony's years ago and experienced those injuries, and I know those machines are still used in one or another gym of his.

Look dont be jeolous he is making money, He now owns the market nothing will compete and thats why 400 jumped ship. if it is that bad a gym why would they join ? You must be the pretty little girls that talk and get together just to be social and complain about life and how bad pattaya is. I feel great going to the gym and am very happy with the equipment. And the hotter it is the more calories you will burn that is true makes you sweat....

So you think that people who don't agree with you are little girls who talk and gossip? I'd say it's far more likely you're the one training like a lady.

We already tried to explain to you that sweating more does not improve your cardio fitness or fat loss. It should be pretty obvious that you sweat more in an effort to lower your body temperature, not because you're burning more calories. You'll burn far less in fact and get dehydrated in the process unless you drink a lot of water.

The reason why so many joined is not because it's a great gym, but because it's the only choice for many - you already said that (so why ask a dumb question i.e. why did they join?). There's dozens of unhappy people reluctantly training at Tony's. If you went earlier you'd notice but you hide out after 11pm.

When your body temp is high do you burn more calories ? Please show me stats which show you otherwise ? I would like to read it. Cause when i train at the gym at night im sweating like a pig. Im surprised im the only one that uses a towl.

I'll never join Tony's gym unless he comes up with a decent place to train, maybe the new buahakao gym.. time will tell.

It's really beyond the scope of this thread. When your body temp is too high your performance is low. That means you cannot perform as much work and therefore you cannot burn as many calories. Surely most people know they are capable of more work in cooler temperatures. It's not rocket science.

When your body temp is high do you burn more calories ?

Maybe these links answer your questions

http://www.thatsfit....n-more-calorie/

http://www.livestron...n-extreme-heat/

From the second article:

"Your body can lose 1 to 2L in an hour, requiring you to replenish water."

I have to drink 1.5 L per hour or 3L over a 2 hour workout at Tony's Sport World when it is sunny outside. A bit less when overcast. After drinking 3L I weigh the same when I get home. I always weigh myself before and after a workout (on my accurate scale at home) to make sure I've rehydrated myself sufficiently.

That's a good idea. How long do you normally train and how much water do you normally consume? Each of us sweats at a different rate and of course it depends on how hard you train. Just make sure you replace the water you lose at the rate you're losing it. By the time you get thirsty it's difficult to catch up.

A good game of squash for an hour and I usually lose more than 2kgs in body weight from sweating.

In summer when it was really hot you could lose even more.

I sweated so much sometimes that I had sweat swishing around in my shoes.

The body can handle a lot if you are fit but it was not enjoyable playing squash in those hot conditions.

But if I am doing weights I dont want to sweat that much and certainly dont enjoy doing cardio under those conditions in a gym especially when aircond units are available.

Tony has the market cornered here and his gyms have gotten worse and worse over the last 10 years I have been using them in Pattaya.

The way I see it is this. There is a big I hate Tony fan club on this channel. In the end he hasn’t closed. His gyms are still open. He has not gone belly up. A lifetime membership at CWOW vs Tony you are ahead if you went with Tony’s gym. Now all you guys complaining oh the air con he turns it off at 2100 that’s fair. Its business maybe he is trying to save money so he to doesn’t have the same future as CWOW. Business is really tough everywhere in the world at the moment. You only have to walk down your local street and duck your head into a local business consumers are not spending. I have owned a business and I can tell you when my revenue drops you have to look at cost cutting hense I would look also at electricity or unfornately not investing in cream of the crop cardio exipment. But what I can tell you is you can get a decent workout there. They have more than enough machines and free weights to have a great workout?

Please understand CWOW couldn’t even pay there rent let alone electricity. Tony turns the aircon off at 2100. Well I would say 95% of his customers train before that time.

Turning the aircon off at 21:00 is the least of the complaints. It's 30C in most areas even with it on so it hardly matters.

Nah, I think you'll find if you read back that a lot of posters here, and interested readers I imagine, have been members of both Tony's and CaWOW during their time in Pattaya. I have spent more than a year in both their gyms and some aspects of Tony's operation are OK - the opening hours, price, flexible pricing options and locations, for example.

For me this thread is more a lament for the passing of CaWOW and a look at the options available now. If Tony has recruited a load of new members following the demise of CaWOW then good luck to him.

Has anyone actually made a complaint to the police for being ripped off by CA WoW?

They took me for 6k in advance trainer fees the day before they closed the door and I had paid up my membership until the end of next February. I also know of one person who paid 70k just before going to Germany on holiday only to come back and find it closed.

In Europe it is a criminal offence to continue trading when you know you are going to fold.

If the guy has taken the money and run, I would imagine the banks would like to talk to him as I understand that they are owed about 120 million.

It will be interesting to see if the extradition will work coming from US to Thailand or do the Americans think it is only one way traffic?

I arrived here one week before they shut, 1 month ago. I joined tony but out of interest I spoke to the manager at the front and she quoted me 14000 for a one year. I told her about the electricty problem a week before she said all fixed all good no problem. If close get refund.

I dont understand how she could say this to me. Then one week later it never opened. If it wasnt for this forum I would have joined.

Even if you could make a case, you'd be way down the list. The banks will be first to get their hands on any money owed.

Well I for one am going to loge a complaint. That is how it works here. If you are happy to take it on the chin and put it down to experience, up to you, as they say. If no one reports this fraud, then they are free to do it again. No record of anyone being unhappy!

Go cowboy, get down there and lodge your complaint - and make Thailand a safer place by protecting us from companies going broke.laugh.png

Please report back and let us know how you're progressing.

You should lodge a complaint. You and many others are creditors of a company which has gone bankrupt. It is up to others to decide if there was a criminal aspect to the case, ie taking memberships when they knew what was about to happen. At least one person is taking action, compared to the people on this thread who have whined a lot but have done nothing. Kind of reverse keyboard warriors.

It may be that nothing will actually come of a complaint, but should they be allowed to perpetuate the belief that this kind of thing is accepted willy nilly in Thailand?

You need to wake up to yourself. The company is broke. There is no money. Get over it.

If some of you want to waste your time, go ahead.

Oink never mentioned anything about money, more about the fraud aspect. So nothing to get over.

I suppose you are entitled to think that this is YOUR thread as you have personally contributed almost 30% of the posts in a 700-odd thread, but let others have a point of view, please

I noticed over the weekend in Bangkok that CA WOW had totally moved their equipment out of the building on Silom and soi Convent. Totally empty inside.

There's nothing or no one stopping you from having your point of view - but that doesn't mean that silly comments aren't going to go unpunished. biggrin.png Don't be so sensitive.

As I said, up to you! If you are one of these people who give lots of advice and do nothing, that is your choice. And no I am not interested in the money, just the fact that so many people have been conned and I at least have an interest in raising the profile, even if you dont!
