Thailand probes radar blackout at main airport

Bangkok, June 23, 2012 (AFP) - Thailand has launched a probe into a radar blackout at its main international airport, a minister said Saturday, after the incident threatened to tarnish the nation's image as a regional aviation hub.

The Sultan of Brunei Darussalam to make official visit to Thailand during 29 Jun – 2 Jul

BANGKOK, 23 June 2012 (NNT) – The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam is set to make an official visit to Thailand later this month.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’Izzaddin Waddaulah of Brunei Darussalam is scheduled to visit Thailand as guest of of the Royal Thai Government during June 29th and July 2nd, in response to an invitation extended by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra during her trip to Brunei last September.

His Majesty, who was crowned the 29th Sultan on August 1, 1968, is now the Prime Minister, the Minister of Defense and the Minister of Finance of Brunei.

His Majesty will have an audience with HM King Bhumibol at the Grand Palace on June 30th before attending an official welcome ceremony at Government House, hosted by the Thai government.

His Majesty will then have a meeting with PM Yingluck on various issues, including the cooperation on agriculture, education and halal food, which will be followed by a dinner reception at the Santi Matri Building, Government House.

The upcoming visit by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’Izzaddin Waddaulah reflects the importance of strong relations between Brunei and Thailand, and opens more doors to other future collaborations for the good of both Southeast Asian nations.

Deputy PM Chalerm wants area police to support work of tourist police

BANGKOK, 23 June 2012 (NNT) – Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubumrung has given a policy to tourist police to seek manpower support from area police in providing safety to foreign visitors.

Speaking at a recent meeting with Police Major General Adit Ngamchitsuksri, Commander of the Tourist Police Division, and tourism-related officials, Pol Capt Chalerm said integrated operations are necessary, in which area police arrange backup forces to patrol tourist attractions and urban centers to relieve the limited manpower of the tourist police.

The Deputy Prime Minister also entrusted the Department of Land Transport and the Marine Department to help register all the existing tour entrepreneurs to make it easier to regulate them. At the meeting, the Tourist Police Commander reported currently prevailing problems such as illegal taxis, and unscrupulous bus and jet-ski operators conning and taking advantage of tourists. These problems are negatively affecting the image of Thai tourism. There have also been cases of tourists being lured into being robbed or physically assaulted.

Health Minister: Low quality medicines will not be prescribed

BANGKOK, 23 June 2012 (NNT) – Minister of Public Health Wittaya Buranasiri has pledged that the government will not decrease the quality of medicines in the universal healthcare scheme after three healthcare-related funds are merged. In the future, patients of incurable diseases like cancer will be included in the scheme.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra did not appear on her weekly TV program on Saturday but assigned Minister Wittaya to take her place and clarify the government’s merging of three national health funds, namely the welfare fund for civil servants, the social security fund and the national health insurance fund.

The merging of the three funds is aimed at providing equal medical service for all Thai citizens. The move enables emergency patients to seek immediate treatment at both public and private hospitals. Mr.Wittaya said AIDS and chronic kidney disease patients have recently been included in the universal healthcare scheme which guarantees equal access to medical service for all.

Government urged to air details of NASA bid to use U-Tapao

BANGKOK, June 23 – Thailand’s Opposition Democrat Party on Saturday called on the government to publicise the details of the United States space agency's request to use the country’s U-Tapao military airport as a base from which to conduct atmospheric studies.
